who are all these young, cost controlled, and talented players you people claim will become available? Can you name one realistic option?
Besides Trouba? I mean the Penguins grabbed Jason Zucker a week ago. Galchenyuk, Haula, JT Miller. The Hurricanes swooped in on Teravainen a couple years ago and got him for nothing.

Wait for the playoffs too when teams get upset early, and will look for scapegoats and a "reset" of their rosters. There are always June/July players that get moved that are good players. Just have to make sure you have proper assets to deal, and fortunately for us, we will have those.

Bit of an odd comparison, as Brassard wasn’t a trade deadline sale.

Don’t think anyone would argue that was a bad trade. Gorton took a gamble and it worked out.
It was more pointing to the fact that he has made some good moves. Some people around here undervalue what he has done. They seem to think that he got poor value for rentals when in fact he has done well.

Because some of us understand there is a salary cap. You want to keep Kakko, Mika, Igor, DeAngelo, Fox in the future? Signing a 29 year old to a 7 year 7M deal prevents that. And that's assuming none of our other young players blow up like Chytil/Krav who would end up commanding a lot as well.
You should also understand that Kakko Igor Chytil, Fox etc will be RFAs for a good chunk of the contract. You should also understand massive dead weight is coming off and cap penalties. You should also understand the cap should be approaching $100M.

There's a reason the top teams want him.

i gorton we trust.

his ability to make solid trades and FA's acquisitions continues to be as good as any one any where.

this teams ability to turn draft picks into difference makers well..... not so much

lets hope for more bodies and less picks coming this way.

Of Course he has. Nobody has denied he had made some good moves. My issue is the contracts he has dished out to defensemen. Shattenkirk,Smith,Skjei,Trouba. These moves have really had serious consequences on our cap

I feel like the trading deadline arms race of the 90s and early 2000s is no longer a thing. Maybe due to the salary cap. But it looks like the market now favors guys with some term left instead of full blown rentals.

PS: Kessel alone has been traded under those parameters TWICE in the last 5 years.
Production wise, Kessel is great. The guy would wake in in the middle of the night and score 30. BUT he is NOT Kreider. And does not come close to bringing what Kreider does to a locker room or his style of play in the playoffs.

If you trade Kreider you have to replace him.

We already have holes.

Hoarding youth and picks without keeping talent...it's just hard to see how we can be better next season without Chris Kreider
Just have to Pray that Kakko takes a big step and Kravtsov is ready for the NHL next year otherwise we’re in trouble

That's exactly what they were saying on the XM Radio hockey show a little while ago.

What trouble are we in?

Players like Kakko, Fox, DeAngelo, Chytil won't get any better? Kakko doesn't need to have a "big step" Another 10-15 points would be great for his development.

Then add on maybe a nice prospect ready to step into the NHL from the Kreider trade.

Then add a full year of Igor.

What is the "trouble" if Krav doesnt make the NHL and if Kakko doesn't have a huge step?

We are going to be just fine without Mr Inconsistency.

That trade wasn't a gamble.

He traded a 55-60 point 29 year old centre for a 45-50 point, still improving 23 year old centre and a 2nd round pick.

The trade was brilliant from the get go.

I am positive he takes steps forward. I am also positive that his steps forward will not be enough to replace Kreider. Not for a few years.

But I am not sure that Gorton has ever intended on Kakko replacing Kreider in the near term.

Next year, if (fairly sizable IF), Kakko can even become a 40 point player, it would be a HUGE step up.

Honestly, and I'm probably in the minority here, but I think there's a better than 50/50 shot that Kakko's production just about replaces Kreider's by next season.

20-25 goals and 45-50 points is very realistic for Kaapo after an offseason of workouts geared towards fitting him into the NHL.

edit - unless we're saying that what Kreider is doing this year is who he is. But in that case, Kreider couldn't replace Kreider's production.

I never said it wasn’t brilliant.

However, Brassard was a better player than Zib at the time of the trade. Zib was also massively inconsistent. And a draft pick is a draft pick. It was entirely possible that he failed to improve anymore.

The trade was literally the definition of a gamble. A gamble doesn’t always have to have negative connotation.

A gamble makes it sound as if it could of easily gone either way with regards to who would come out better.

Everybody knew who had come out the better of the trade immediately, though. We just ended up coming out much, much better than anybody could of anticipated.
