I'm not sure if it's him or the system, but yes, he doesn't go to the boards. He's 3rd man high in both O-zone and D-zone. Rarely goes that last 15 feet or so at either end, and doesn't engage physically at all. It's stick reach all the time. He doesn't front guys, put physical pressure (trap) them or pressure anyone from behind even though he definitely has the speed to do this.
He's definitely not slow. He almost caught up to 2 players on breakaways while coming from further back. He beat his own D back & got within solid hooking/slashing distance. He has top end speed. He just doesn't use it. He spends most of his time gliding and not actually skating.
Watching him skate to get up to speed on the breakaways, you could see the kid already has pretty big quads. His starts-ups, acceleration, change of direction are all really smooth.
I thought he had a fairly strong 3rd. The whole team was a no show in first 2.
I think with Wright it's all about getting his pace up. He plays at a slow pace. The effort he put in to catch up to the breakaways is the effort he needs to put in ALL the time.
He is able to raise his level of play. He just needs to do it far more consistently, like more than 2-3 shifts a game.
You draft him & hope he "levels" up as
