Karlsson and Doughty were among the very best defencemen in the league when they signed these contracts. Seth Jones didn't get a single Norris vote this year and got a mere 5 votes last year. He might bounce back but he is paid like one of the very best defencemen despite not having been one for two years now.

It's not at all unreasonable to think the cap will be over $95m by the 6-8th year on this contract, where Jones' cap hit will only be around 10%, which isn't too bad if he can rebound a little bit.
