He is pretty small, but very solid offensive skill. There could be a decent chance he beats Lindmark out for 3rd line center spot. My guess is he starts the year as a third line winger.

Depending on Tassy, everything could shift upwards too. Which could put Whitelaw on a line with Lucius and Stramel. That would be an interesting line.

Interesting in the sense that it could be an offensively inclined line?

My suspicion based off of nothing is that this wasn't just drafting a center because they need a center, but drafting a center that they can comfortably project out as a center (featuring size). There were other higher upside center picks that might not project as centers at the NHL level, but they're seeing what's happening with Rossi right now, and they wanted someone they feel comfortably can be a center in the NHL.

So that is to say, drafting for positional need doesn't always have to be such a "reach", but they've basically backed themselves into a corner by drafting so many wingers and defensemen the last couple of years, they need to get centers from the draft. So it's a safety pick in that sense.
100% agree with this. I think Strammel was pretty high on the board unless a few others fell of course. But Judd and Billy knew where they were picking and I think this is the guy they wanted at that pick, for better or worse. I'm warming up to the kid and hoping that next year he shows why he was initially considered as high as he was. We'll see, I guess

Russo said on KFAN that they passed someone on their list to take Stramel. He specifically said Gabe Perreault shortly there after and they passed on him because he's 5'9" and a slow skater.

He also said they tried to trade up to pick Oliver Moore.

Lesson learned?
That what my next point was going to be. Im not calling Rossi a bust by any means but if we already have an undersized slow skating center prospect in the pipeline why not take a bigger true center kinda like what AKL mentioned a few posts ago.

I think there's zero consternation about this pick if Stramel averaged ~28 in the "consensus" rankings. It's the shock of seeing 47, 42, 61, 68, 50, etc... on Elite Prospects (or wherever).

The baseline idea of the pick is perfectly fine.

Easy kid to root for. Works hard, challenges himself (playing C in Big Ten at 17), lost his father young and has local ties.

His floor is probably the highest since Boldy as a defensively sound 6’3 RHC who is excellent on the dot. Ceiling is TBD. Would be great to see him closer to 25-30 points this year, ideally with flashes of dominance and another strong WJC showing.

As previously mentioned this upcoming year will be a huge for him because it sounds like Wisconsin was a bit of a crap show last year.

Hope he plays well enough to make it, with some of the top guys not leaving and the recent NTDP class coming in.

I don't care about the ranks, but when I look at the scouting reports and see them focusing on his size and strength and his work ethic, instead of seeing stuff about his skill and creativity, it's hard to get super excited about him. Usually when that's the case, it's because the players don't have much skill and creativity to talk about.

It is kind of wierd to have a draft where none of the picks probably crack our top like 8 to 10 prospects...

But we had the opportunity to pick Kulich instead.

I'm fine with Ohgren over Snuggerud. Would I have preferred Kulich? Yes. But we had two opportunities to get him and we passed.
Also, its not like Ohgren is seen to be only a bottom six forward. There some solid offensive upside in the pick - similar to how felt with Stenberg who I was pushing for. He CAN play a bottom six role but also develop into a staple 2nd line two-way winger with a shot.

I like Ohgren. I think he has the potential to be a nice goal scoring two way winger. The issue is people get to see Snuggerud way more than Ohgren at this moment.

I stand by my joke that Ohgren would have scored that goal in the championship game against Quinnipiac.

It's also the skillset, now that we've seen it translate up at least 1 level. A right-shooter with a great shot might tick a box or two here.
