If it is 1yr, under 1mil, there's no risk.

I didn't mean that in terms of him being a term/cap liability, let me clarify:

I'd be worried about his impact in the room and the general dysfunction he is rumoured to bring. He has clearly not been a well liked player on any team he has been on. Edmonton is not deep and they desperately need veteran players. Why they might cut him seems immediately obvious to me, but I don't want to slander Versteeg...

I'd worry about my team signing a guy who has consistently positive possession metrics, who is a proven goal scorer, a proven playoff performer, and provides a boost to his teammates (in terms of shot generation, scoring chance generation), yet still manages to find himself on the trade/free agency block year after year. I don't want to speak conjecturally in any way past this, but clearly there is something that NHL executives know about Versteeg that we do not. Cheers

Like I said, if it's 1 year, there's no risk. He's not going to poison the whole locker room in one season. If he doesn't fit, he'll be flipped at the deadline or let go in the offseason.

You were though.

Remember that thread 3 weeks ago when the HfFlames were laughing at the Oilers for giving this guy a PTO

There are two members I can think of on the board that can't stand the guy. I disregard one of them regardless of what's happening, because his insight is nothing for me... This is a good signing for Calgary.

i thought for sure EDM was going to sign him...

Calgary out of nowhere though...

Tonnes of talk about his character here. I've personally not heard bad stuff before, and was fine in the locker room in Toronto, as I remember...

Calgary really wasn't out of nowhere.. it was his #1 choice with his family being in LEthbridge .. they didn't want to give him a PTO so he signed one with Edmonton. . 2nd closest to his home. With JohnnyG signing a cheapie deal they now have cap and roster spot for him.. edmonton is using up a contract spot on Gryba instead

That's too bad, I though he would have been a good fit in our 3rd line. Wonder if it was the Oilers decision not to offer him a contract or Versteeg's decision to go elsewhere. ???

If it was his decision, Calgary is closer to Lethbridge (his home town)... maybe the Flames were his team growing up or maybe he feels he has a better shot with the Flames.

If it was the Oilers decision... do they intend on keeping Puljujarvi? Last round of waivers would happen tomorrow (I think).

Oh well... you win some, you lose some.

Comparing cap costs for #Flames:
Bollig in CGY, no Versteeg: $1.25M + $0M = $1.25M
Bollig in AHL + Versteeg: $0.3M + $0.95M = $1.25M

I'll take it

I thought they simply had no interest in Versteeg before.

And is Gryba confirmed? I know its been the talk.

I'm happy with this. Right handed shot with some offensive talent. Good for 40 points or so. Worst case scenario, he's buried or dealt.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Versteeg
Tkachuk - Bennett - Brouwer
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
Bouma - Stajan - Chiasson

I think the biggest factor is that he's Calgary's best 1st Line RW option, and he was being penciled in as 3rd line in EDM.

Do the Oilers have something else coming down? If not, I feel like Chiarelli should have gotten Versteeg signed before he traded away Yakupov.

Probably just means that Pool Party and Calligula have made the team.

Lucic - McDavid -Eberle
Pouliot - Nuge - Draisaitl
Maroon - Caggiula - Pulujarvi
Hendricks - Letestu - Kassian

Pitlick as 13th forward

No fit for Versteeg if they feel Pulujarvi and Caggiula are ready aside from maybe as 13th forward. Calgary has a weaker middle six on the wing so there is a better chance for Versteeg to play there. Would make sense for him to sign there even if both teams did or do offer him a deal.

Oilers did offer contract, he decide to sign with flames instead. Better chance to play top 6 and get another contract next season.

good luck CGY fans, any guy who moves around this much is a guaranteed liability

If it's 1 year and under $1 million, it's not much of a risk. Versteeg has every reason to work his butt off to get a new contract next year.

Can't say I'm in love with the move, but there's pretty much 0 risk here.

He's good enough to play on the third line. I just can't believe they are giving him a rookie center and maroon to work with

Maroon is fine on the third line. I'd agree though that 2 rookies on the same line isn't really ideal. If it isn't working, we have other options though, including bumping Leon back to 3C and putting Caggiula and Pulujarvi as 2/3 right wingers.

Well hopefully they don't figure that out for the first couple games haha
