Recent trades for rhd made that seem likely. I guess because he is more of a 4/5 his value doesn't spike. Who does Arizona have to replace him?

Connaughton, DeAngelo, Wood.

DeAngelo is getting called up shortly. Has shown fantastic skill and talent on NHL PP already.

Nothing new here. Fans demand the world for their players because they live in a fantasy world with unicorns. Essentially, the Yotes got crap for him.

Maybe it's a buyer's market.
The media hypes these guys up but the value is never as big as they claim.

but armchair gms think they can get 1st rounders left and right. the market is the market. If a Gm could get what they want they would.

Teams just don't trade 1st rounders anymore. If they do, it's to get much more of an impact player.

I don't think even Duchense or Landeskog would get as much as the media claim.

Duchene and Landeskog would get a windfall. Which is why neither is likely to be traded.

But you are right. 1st just don't get moved that much anymore at the deadline. Shattenkirk and Hanzal are probably the only two on the market that should demand one.

Hard not to like it for the Flames. 3rd for a young RHD capable of top 4 minutes? With 50% retention? Also not having to protect him in expansion as he'll be a UFA. If he's not a fit then they can look elsewhere. Added plus is the demise of Dennis Wideman's TOI. Treliving really thinks this stuff out.

A third rounder in a bad draft year AND at 50 percent retained.

Chayka is awful.

Wish the leafs were in on this fleecing

Bartkowski was to meet expansion requirements.

Stone is now our #4, as it was known Treliving was looking for a RHD to play with Brodie.

Also, Stone makes a lot of sense to the Flames since he isn't signed for next year. There was no sense acquiring a D under contract, then having to protect that player in expansion along with Brodie, Giordano and Hamilton while exposing Frolik.

Also, Treliving would also at least have a sense that Stone is signable, as he (and Conroy) have said they weren't looking at adding rentals.
Did Brouwer change his name? zero chance Frolik is exposed.

As for the trade. In case nobody noticed Wideman completely forgot how to play hockey. the flames could equip Stone with ski boots and a cricket stick and he would be a better #4 with Brodie.

It's a total seller's market, but Calgary got a bargain instead. Good job by Treliving, but there's no way Stone doesn't return at least a 2nd (basically a low 1st) if Chayka waits until desperation time at the TDL.

Maybe Chayka thought the expansion draft would make teams hesitant to spend much on a complementary piece but tons of teams are in win-now mode. He misjudged the market.

The guy who is an actual GM and talks with other GMs on a daily/weekly basis is the one who misjudged the market? It surely can't be the poster on HF who knows nothing of what is actually going on?

Make my day.
I realize Stone has struggled this year but this seems like an awfully low return for a solid top 4, right shot D. Calgary did well.

Alternatively it seems reasonable for a struggling 3rd pairing UFA coming off a mangled knee. That is what Arizona is trading away and getting paid for. The Flames aren't going to pay top 4 D prices for a 3rd pairing rental, which is how they have to look at the deal (Stone might not rebound, he might not resign, Flames can still miss the playoffs).

Then there is the trade within the trade (top 4 D, Calgary connections). That is what Calgary is wanting to get out of the trade. They get 2+ months to decide if that player will come back before signing him to a new contract. In many ways this an extended negotiating rights deal for them.

How ever you look at it, teams aren't going to pay the price for a top Dman when they are being handed a 3rd pairing rental.

Stone was a great 2nd pairing defenseman the last 1 and a half seasons.

If Calgary resigns him (which they have a good chance of doing seeing as he played junior hockey there) then they win this trade. As a Coyotes fan i can admit that, but in no sense is it a steal. Getting a 3rd and a 5th if he signs is not a bad return.

Michael Stone was a 3rd round pick, so we essentially gave up what we risked to take him, plus a 5th if it works out.

The bottom line is that we have DeAngelo and Wood more than ready to take his place right now. So it was necessary. Would i have liked to receive more? Sure, but I think we broke even in the long haul.

Best of luck to Calgary, Stone is good, with a helluva shot. Hope he re-signs for both of our sake.
