I kinda feel bad for the Coyotes on this one. From my perspective they did everything right with Stone and end up losing, what should be a second pairing staple for 3+ more seasons, and only end up with a 3rd rounder for their troubles.

Injuries and bad luck. It isn't like they signed him to a big, unwarranted extension or anything dumb.

Oh well.
I actually think the Coyotes did Stone a solid. His wife is from Calgary and they recently had twins. Being close to family will be great for his wife and babies.

Bummer, thought the left could get him. Good deal for Calgary, Zona opens up a contract spot to potentially take on a bad contract for another premium. Smart by both gms

This is a great move for Calgary. The 3rd is a crap shoot in any draft so to improve D depth going into a playoff push is very valuable even if it's just to the 3rd pairing. Well done Calgary, surprised Arizona retained anything at that price.

My question is how exactly does this help Calgary? Defense is not their issue this year. They have a very pedestrian offense and their goaltending is still suspect at best.

Defence is most definitely part of the issue. We have big names, sure, but no one that really defends well.

The defense is very much an issue, defense is the reason why our goaltending hasn't looked very good. Anytime you can make it harder for your opponents to score goals, if increases your chances at winning.

Not a very good player who is boosted by OEL. Although, what Flames traded for him was good and is exactly what he's worth, no discount (except for retention). Doesn't really help the Flames at all really, I expect Treleving to do more. Also, I think this messes up the exposing thing for Calgary now if they wanna protect Stone.

But it's far from the biggest. I think it goes both ways.

Of course but if your goaltender isn't stopping the most basic of chances then it really makes things that much harder. The Flames still don't have solid goaltending (which they probably can't upgrade too much right now) and their bottom 6 is very weak.

Why would they protect a pending UFA?

There is LOTS of room to upgrade the D

He definitely helps the Flames. It does a couple things.

- Wideman moves out of the top 4, possibly out of the line-up. That is a huge plus.
- Adds physicality, in adding Bartkowski and now Stone our defense has gone from very soft to fairly physical.

The Flames are also missing a hard hitting shut down guy. Brodie, Hamilton, and Giordano are all more offensively orientated. Giordano and Brodie can skate and back check, but rarely throw large hits and don't do as well against large bodies.

The Flames need more of a Regehr type again. Hopefully, Stone can be that.

The problem with our goaltending is the number of quality chances the defense gives up and has been for 3 years.

He only played 84 minutes with OEL.

Yeah he boosted him, but let's be serious Stone has just had a godawful season.

It absolutely is/was the Flames biggest problem. Our bottom 3 was Wideman, Engelland and Jokipakka. Probably among the worst in the league for that area.

Chayka miss big time in the summer to sell Stone for good return.
As has been pointed out multiple times, Stone blew out his knee at the end of last season. The Coyotes were not going to get a good return then either.
