Severson played well with Christiansen and poorly with Provorov... Obviously the solution is play him with Johnson

There are times and players I'm happy to see traded for picks, this is not one of them. This is a player you do what you gotta do to sign him and take it to the last possible moment and of he straight up won't sign then you can cross that bridge

I don’t care if he’s shooting 80%. He’s showing some good offense overall but much more imprortant he brings a toughness the Jackets otherwise totally lack. I mean 100% lack. Keep Olivier even though I know not getting that 3rd round pick will be devastating :sarcasm:

he brings toughness to the team and is good in the room – i am not discounting those things. i'm also not saying that this team needs to maximize cap efficiency of every contract.

but when you look at other guys who fit that archetype (jeannot, reaves, goodrow, hathaway)… well, it sure seems like the teams that traded those guys away did a lot better than the ones who signed them to their next contracts.

and if the primary return is draft picks, they don't have to actually use those to draft prospects, they can use them to bolster a trade or get a guy who will help higher in the lineup.

i mean, this is just patently false.

i get that some of these guys are injured, but you can't say a team that has gudbranson, voronkov and jenner isn't tough.

i'd even argue they have more tough young guys than just about any other team (elick, sillinger, malatesta, lindstrom… even fantilli + jiricek could be named here).

st. louis got a 1st + a better bottom sixer for ryan reaves + a 2nd. nashville got an entire draft for tanner jeannot. washington used garnet hathaway to sweeten the haul they got for orlov.

in all three cases, the team that traded the player away got a good return + the player got massively overpaid on their next deal.

again, i really like olivier, and i would be happy if they kept him around. but smart teams sell high and don't overpay for shooting benders or bottom sixers.

Now Olivier has high price. Btw, he's French Canadian, so we could get good price from Montreal. I think they have two or three first round draft picks, one in the second thanks to us min and lot of talented players. So maybe we could get a spot in the second round. And use it in the trade.
Of course, I'd like to keep Mathieu, but GM may think differently.

I agree but if someone was dumb enough to take him unextended and perhaps there was an under the radar agreement that we would re-sign him as a free agent then depending on the return I'd consider it.

olivier + a mid-round pick for a late first, then re-signing him this summer?

It's rare but it happens. Would rather not risk it but if it did go down that way I wouldn't be too upset. From the deadline until he actually came back I'd be pretty pissed though :laugh:

I wouldn't set my expectations that high, but if someone is crazy enough to offer it... :dunno:

If you have Christian-Severson set, then how do you arrange Werenski/Provorov/Fabbro?

Severson and Provorov both seem to be very needy partner-wise and that's really messing with our ability to configure our blueline.

If those are the only two plausible options, then, yes, the right choice is obvious IMO. But I suspect the situation is more nuanced than that.

Seems simple to me. For the greater good of the entire defense you leave Werenski-Provorov Christiansen-Severson alone. You can move Fabbro up when Provorov is dealt

If that's what we're looking at I'd rather move Provorov immediately and stick with Werenski-Fabbro.

And that still doesn't give us a clear direction for the third pairing.

Eh, still think it clearly gives us the best combo as a whole for the defense and keeps a positive look at Provorov until he's dealt.

Essentially, how he’s playing offensively is just the cherry on top. He’s not needed and wouldnt be kept around for his offense or anything to do with his shooting %.

That said, part of his shooting percentage being so high, is because he is a pretty smart player and willing to attack the net and get shots from in close.

He’s proving/proven he’s more than a “fighter”, and that’s all that matters. If he’s reluctant to re-sign or tells the team he’s going to UFA, obviously things change, but , other than that there is ZERO reason to look to move on from him.

i love olivier but i'd bristle at anything above a $2.5m aav on an extension. quality fourth liners are still fourth liners.

speaking of fourth liners, i've been loving aston reese's game here. would love for them to keep him around, and i doubt he'd cost more than olivier is making on his current deal.

Or if he says he wants to explore free agency before he commits to Columbus then yeah get something for him than losing him for nothing. Tell him still interested but want to acquire assets. Plus, he goes to a contender and has a chance at the Cup. Only downside is he enjoys his new team/city and signs with them or playing in the playoffs made a playoff team his priority over Columbus.

I think Olivier has done better than "fourth line", but otherwise that's probably fair.

Fair points on his French Canadian angle, but wouldn’t the Habs be more in seller mode than buyer mode?
