Line Combos: CBJ Roster Discussion/Line Combos/Injury Report

In the system pretty much all they have is Savoie and Akey isn't it? No 1st either
They have a 1st in 2026, I think, which is less appealing. Sam O'Reilly was their pick from last year, no? I think there are other teams that will have more interesting offers.

Fair points on his French Canadian angle, but wouldn’t the Habs be more in seller mode than buyer mode?
But Olivier is a player whom need the most teams.
They can trade Armia, Dvorak if only forwards.
Also look at standing, Montreal is 3 points
Montreal is 3 points behind Buffalo. Like us. They will fight. A winning culture isn't created by selling out players, it's created by fighting to the end, gradually changing roles in the team. If Sillinger had played the 2021/22 season in the AHL instead of the NHL, it might have helped his development more. It's not for nothing that Waddell said that youngsters should play in the NHL only when they are ready.

F & N notes

Someone asked about first to be traded and biggest return in trade

“Jiricek if traded would get the biggest return”

“Provy not sure he gets a 1st. Maybe not. Could be a 2nd and a prospect.”

“I think a lot of what comes back at TDL would be draft picks”

“I’m fine with Mateychuk over baking in the AHL. That’s never been done in franchise history.”

“Olivier with his recent play believe it or not has worked his way onto the list or at least to the top of the list” - guessing he meant trade candidates

“Can’t say for sure on Danforth. Can’t say it doesn’t make sense either.” - Talking about Danforth extension

Thinks we keep one of Kuraly or Danforth at TDL.

Porty did say Sunday gathering will have some new details about TDL candidates.

No firm offer on the table with Jiricek. However, Porty thinks phone calls are going out. Reiterates that Jiricek has not requested a trade. Porty thinks they were too patient with Jiricek.

Mentions the Drysdale - Gauthier deal as well.

Re: Jiricek - Thinks it would be a Yager - McGroarty trade type deal

KJ says injury was a different part of the shoulder. Not the surgically repaired part.

Trade Big Board

Prov #1 - Jiricek #8 - Olivier #11

“[Provorov] will likely net the Blue Jackets a first-round pick before the deadline.”

“The Blue Jackets are open to listening on offers to give [Jiricek] a fresh start.”

“Olivier has caught the attention of at least a couple of NHL teams..”

I was really skeptical of the Olivier signing initially but he quickly won me over once I saw he can actually play hockey.

As for potentially trading him, I get both sides of the argument, he is the kind of guy teams potentially overpay (maybe there's a reason for that though?), but then again CBJ is not exactly struggling with cap and IMO at this point any decision they make should not be based on perceived "value" but what's actually making the team better. And there's many things that play into that.

If someone offers a pick for Olivier that seems like an overpay, that might be really good "value"... but it also might be a bit like a hungry person being offered $100 worth of stock in a potato farm for a bag of potatoes. That's great value but doesn't really feed the person, and who knows what the value of that stock will be in 5 years. I really outdid myself with this analogy, sorry about that :D

Olivier is only 27 and brings so much value to the bottom 6. Barring an overwhelming trade offer, he should be extended.

Plenty of time remains before the March 7 trade deadline, but it appears interest is already building in Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Ivan Provorov.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Blue Jackets will be looking for a first-round pick back for Provorov, once the team decides they are ready to deal him.

"Ivan Provorov figures to be the No. 1 rental defenceman traded before March 7," LeBrun explained on Insider Trading. "But the Columbus Blue Jackets are calling the several teams that have reached out or telling them they're not ready to deal with him quite yet.

"And there's an understandable sensitivity to the Jackets wanting to give their group as long a leash as possible to remain competitive. But the business of the game will take over at some point here. They're not going to make the playoffs.

"They have to manage their assets ahead of March 7. They will most likely deal Provorov.

"The asking price will be a first-round pick, which is obviously pretty rich. Now, last year, Sean Walker and Noah Hanifin did indeed fetch a first-round pick as rental defenceman at the deadline. Chris Tanev did not, although some of that (is because) Calgary just preferred the package they got from Dallas. So, we'll see if [Blue Jackets general manager] Don Waddell can get that. But [Provorov] will be a name we'll be talking about a lot."

Provorov is in his second season with the Blue Jackets after being in the summer of 2023 from the Philadelphia Flyers. He is a pending unrestricted free agent carrying a cap hit of $4.725 million after the Los Angeles Kings retained just over $2 million of his $6.75 million salary in the three-way trade that landed him in Columbus.

Tampa doesn't have 1st or 3rd rounders this year, so I would decline that offer.

If they did, and they offered it, that would qualify as overwhelming.
this is what OP was referencing

imo if they can get something like a 2nd + 4th for him, it's doable. jackets can then turn around and offer similar draft capital to a cap-strapped team for a more impactful forward.

conjuring up a scenario where the jackets get a 2nd for olivier at the deadline, then flip it at the draft to bring back bjorkstrand :naughty:

I respectfully disagree. Would rather have Olivier for the next 3-4 years than some later round magic beans that may make the team 4-5 years from now.

I also think it is highly unlikely that a 2nd round pick would return Bjorkstrand.

Extra picks certainly have value and I'm not in the crowd that says CBJ has enough prospects. Just saying I wouldn't trade Olivier for mid to late round picks.

i'm not saying i'd rather have olivier than a second round prospect.

i'm saying that trading olivier to a contender that is desperate to add toughness could net a draft asset that could be flipped at the draft for an immediate improvement higher in the lineup.

making the fourth line worse to improve a top-three line is good business. there's no shortage of quality fourth liners. aston-reese has been awesome, danforth and kuraly are more than serviceable, and malatesta could be up soon.

I also think it is highly unlikely that a 2nd round pick would return Bjorkstrand.
it was a hypothetical.

that said, seattle's going to be cap-strapped. last time bjorky was on a cap-strapped team, he was moved… for a package built around a second-rounder. and he's older now, with less term left. it's not at all out of the question.

Extra picks certainly have value and I'm not in the crowd that says CBJ has enough prospects. Just saying I wouldn't trade Olivier for mid to late round picks.
i'd argue that the jackets don't get value out of making the picks, but they get a ton of value out of having the picks as it gives them capital to trade and easy levers to pull to improve the roster right now.

assets + cap space = huge opportunity to improve the roster immediately via trades.
