"I think I could probably survive there (AHL) but I'm not allowed to," Mateychuk said during Blue Jackets development camp last month. "I want to be playing at that level but it's not really an option. I try not to think about it too much and just try to make the best of what it is."

Columbus director of player personnel Chris Clark said the key for Mateychuk is to set lofty goals at Moose Jaw.

"You want to be the best of the best of the best," Clark said, "and if you're over overripe, that's better than coming too early to the NHL. We've had players play an extra year and then dominate that year."
Another season with Moose Jaw will allow Mateychuk to hone his defensive skills and adjust to the added muscle needed to play professionally. He is listed as 6-foot-1, 188 pounds but said during development camp in July that he is about 200 pounds.

"I tried to put on the right type of weight where I still feel powerful and still feel like my skating is really good," he said. "It's been a really good start to that."

"You always want to see that progress," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "With some guys, you see some radical jumps. They can make big gains in the offseason at this age. We're glad to see it."

Mateychuk said he is is spurred by not being named to the roster for gold medal-winning Canada in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"It's definitely a big motivator," he said. "You want to show them that you're ready to take on that role with them and be a contributing factor."

I doubt he's 6'1 as article says but rather 5'11-200.

Edit. Guess which former Jackets LD was 5'11-208 in his playing career?

Wouldn't it be something if one day Mateychuk could play defense the way he did? :naughty:

Yeah the 6'1" thing is weird, hes been listed at 5'11" forever.

Before seeing the picture I thought Wisniewski (I know hes a righty) but thought that was strange for a hopeful level to reach. Then started to think was Beauchemin actually only 5'11" I didnt think he was a giant but thought he was a bit taller

He was given the task of getting stronger by the coaches of Columbus, who drafted him the year before. “I've put on six or seven kilos since last year, but no fat, so that's cool. On the ice, it will probably be a little more difficult with skating, but then again, I don't expect such a big difference," reports Stanislav Svozil.

^Story from Friday. Hard to say based on this how much he weighs currently but likely not quite as much as Mateychuk?

Rysavy interview from yesterday

"I got a great experience and learned new things. But the camp was challenging. We went to the gym or to the ice for five or six days straight," Ryšavý returns to the first half of July. In Ohio's capital, he basically had two-phase workouts every day. "It was two ices right after each other, we just moved from one hall to another. Before the classic training, we had half an hour of skating technique. It was more intense than I expected," he admits.

"I thought we would go more to the edges and slowly get into it. But it doesn't work like that overseas, they don't mess with you there. They just throw you into it and we have to talk," he comments on the practices of overseas coaches. "It's different than when you go power-skating in the Czech Republic. On the other hand, it served its purpose," he adds.
While his friend and teammate from the youth national team Svozil recently treated an ankle injury, Ryšavý's shoulders are currently the biggest problem. He heard from the Columbus coaches that he had to focus on them. "Otherwise they'll tell you thanks for a good camp and see you at the main camp in September," he describes.

At the Blue Jackets rookie camp, he can win his first NHL starts. "I don't know at all what will happen. I will do my best to do well. I'll pack up and finish where I end up. I know there are some possibilities, but it's not worth talking about them now," reports Ryšavý.

Probably helps that he’s Canadian? Not sure how he’s ranked higher than Faber tbh.
When I look at the list for who voted I dont see much of a Canadian bias there. Mateychuk is a prototypical current day defenseman. Has to continue growing on the defensive side but the offense and transition game are exciting

Canadian comment was more of a joke fyi. Excited to see how he turns out. Hoping for a healthy version of Ryan Murray.

Im surprised to see him get on the board already. Not that I dont think he deserves it, I like him more than many here but I didnt think he'd get board recognition already
Draft position probably has more impact on the votes in general than it should. I was kind of surprised to notice a guy like Luneau still on the voting board. Not that I've had lots of viewings of his draft year and D+1, but by looking at the playing position, frame and production last year I would expect more people to be vocal about him at this stage of the rankings.

Hard for me to spot any red flags from that video. Perhaps not an eye popping talent in any particular aspect of the game but is quietly good everywhere and seems to have legitimate NHL tools. Could be a very good two-way D one day.

I'm happy that Mateychuk seems to be taking improvement of his defensive game seriously based on his interview comments and the weight he's put on lately. I expect him to look stronger and more competitive against WHL players next year but it might take several years before we see clear growth in his defensive awareness. Last year his rush defense and passing lane/shot blocking skills were not even close to NHL-level imo.

And were Jiricek’s??
I'd say they were closer for sure. Unlike Mateychuk, his main issue there seemed to be backwards skating/pivoting, but in terms of awareness and strength he looked more ready. Plus he's got a longer reach which automatically gives him an edge in all defensive situations.

Anyone feel free to answer.
my answer to this: who the hell knows?

anyone who can accurately evaluate how NHL-ready jiricek's defense was last year based on him playing four games on a team that was constantly having team-wide breakdowns in the d-zone and getting carved up in transition should probably be in an NHL front office instead of on HFB.

We saw Jiricek getting walked in 1 on 1 situations, you can't put that on team issues. He was flatly unready and should not have been put in that situation.

I wish I knew what the kid's stats were in this tourney. I realize being voted top goalie doesn't mean he played well...just that he played better than the rest of the guys. That said, it is getting harder and harder to think he might not beat the odds (based on his height) because all he seems to do regardless of where he plays...is play well.

Yes, and Ivanov was already dominant in the MHL in his draft season, .928 in the regular season and .931 in the playoffs. That's all amazing and yet he still went in the 5th round. Goalie scouts seemed to think the odds are long even despite the gaudy performances.
