this cant be the main reason to justify the trade.

Its a win now move from a 59 pts team. Unusual at the very least.
Developing teams need to be competitive or else the rot of ennui and acceptance of losing sets in and destroys any chance of competing when it genuinely matters. It's not exclusively about minmaxing pick value.

the Flyers couldn't have waited 2 weeks? Florida seems like a team that would be one of the biggest suitors for Provorov.
This may have been driven by LA wanting the deal as soon as possible, just to be 100% they have Peterson out as a starting point to the offseason.

I'd guess they had other options to do so if Philly felt like dragging it out

Edit: also, look at what LA gave up. Florida doesn't have that to give

Yeah, we as Flyers fans can't emphasize this enough: Provorov is not a PP QB. He isn't good at it despite being put there for so long.

Provorov can bounce back but that likely won't ever be a strong suit

Good thing he won't have to be on Columbus team that already has Werenski, Boqvist. and Jiricek for that. I'm more concerned that he'll pout that he isn't getting PP minutes.

Most of the Ontario players produced about 10-20% less than they did the year before, but Grans produced 64% less, going from 24pts in 56gms to 9pts in 59gms. I don't know if his minutes or usage changed or he was playing through injury, but that decline really stands out from the rest of the team. He's young, though, so it may be nothing to worry about. Hopefully, it was just an anomaly and he rebounds next season. Maybe a new environment in which advancement isn't as blocked on the right side will give him more confidence and motivation. It couldn't have been very encouraging for him this season to know that, no matter how well he played, there was almost no chance of him beating out Clarke and Spence to make the Kings.
Not worried about points being put up by Helge Grans I’d rather see big Grans keep the pucks out of the zone.

This is a report I’ve seen on Grans:
Has National Hockey League size and his right-handed shot is added value at the highest level. Moves the puck reasonably well and is a solid defender who uses his long stick effectively against attacking forwards. Skates very well for his size. Can log a ton of minutes at any level. While he is rather adept at joining the rush, he needs to learn how to pick his spots better; he often gets caught up ice due to bad pinches. Also lacks a bit of hockey sense, which prevents him from becoming a true No. 1 defenseman in the NHL.

Long Range Potential: Big, smooth minute-munching defenseman with upside.

I’d much rather have Grans as a stay at home defensive defenseman then a points scoring defender.

If he were a perfect prospect he would not be available so got to be happy with adding Grans. Not Clarke-level of course.
i hope for a 2nd pairing ceiling and a 3rd pair floor. Walker buys him 1 year in Lehigh

Not it wasn't. It only took (2) 2nds to move him without retention. Not a first. The retention was about the same as the Walker contract so that's a wash. It allows cap space for Gavrikov, Vilardi, Kupari, Bjornfot and a roster spot for Clarke. Also let's them keep all their forward depth. Just need to sign a cheap backup goalie.

Realistically, LA only lost Petersen, Grans and 2nd for AHL depth players and got to swap Walker for Clarke in the lineup for only $300,000 bump in cap.

Iafallo--Kopitar--Kempe
Moore--Danault--Arvidsson
Fiala--Byfield--Vilardi
Kupari--Lizotte--Kaliyev

Anderson--Doughty
Gavrikov--Clarke
Bjornfot--Roy

Copley
(Backup)
You're cool with flying through this competitive window with Copley as #1??? Is Durzi the odd man out on D now?

Makes sense for CBJ since they basically traded Gavrikov (UFA) and a conditional 2nd for a retained Provorov. This basically fills the hole Gavrikov left on the 2nd pairing with a similar player.

The lack of experience on the right side and boat anchor Gudbranson are still here, but I cannot imagine going into next season with a defense of Werenski, Boqvist, Gudbranson, Peeke, Jiricek, and Bean. The goal is to get better this year not even worse.

Cal Petersen in the minors would have been a 3.885m x 2 cap hit. Provorov at 30% gives them a 2.025m x 2 cap hit. To shrink that cap they gave up:
  • 2024 2nd rounder
  • Sean Walker
  • Helge Grans
Seems like a lot to me.
That's a lot of nothing really for a win now team that needs cap space to keep their roster intact. Dumped two bad contracts and gave up a late future 2nd and meh prospect.

Seems like LA gave up a lot for just cap space. I wonder if Philly flips some of those piece for players
Between the logjam at D and waiver rules, decisions on prospects had to be made. Walker, and his almsot $3M in cap space, and Grans were not in the future of the team. Clarke, Bjornfot, and Spence need roster spots.

For sure. He's not going to PP QB anytime with Werenski around.

Provorov has the tools to be a #2 defensive guy to eat a lot of minutes, but he's under this delusion that he can do it all. If CBJ can get him to focus on just defense, it'll go really well I think.

Grans in the minors at 21 yrs old isnt hurting Clarke like at all. Giving away an early 2nd in 2020 is nuts.
They were forced to move when best move was not moving. And lets not act like this was the only move to free cap.
Gavrikov’s trade tree getting bigger.

Unlikely but imagine if Gavrikov doesnt sign…

People saying Provorov has off-ice issues seem to really be projecting, I really don't think his incident is anything that's considered a real "issue" by league personnel
Not sure what the projecting comment means. Can you please elaborate (thought I had earlier asked the question but I may not have hit reply or for some strange reason it got deleted)?

People thinking that because they see it as a major issue to take into consideration for a trade that means GMs and front office staff will also see it that way, even though that doesn’t appear to be the case

Really?

They had half the roster from the AHL and got abysmal coaching.

Werenski takes over Gavrikovs role
Provorov replaces an AHL player
Babcock replaces Larsen and they have no chance at improving?
All those things won’t make goalies life easier?

+ all the internal growth they’ll get
I don't remember if it was your or another poster that said the goaltending issue will get solved in 12-24 months.

If they're running Elvis as their starter again, CBJ is sunk from the beginning.

I really like to see that 3 GM's were able to think outside the box here.

Curious to see what is next for CBJ. Still some holes at Center and Goaltending if they really want to make a push next year.

It sure as hell isn’t a win now move.
They kept all their prospects and 3rd overall pick.

They’ve had 7 1st round picks in 3 drafts compined& have one of the best prospect pools in the league.

It’s definitely time for Columbus to go from potential to actually winning games in the NHL.
There’s zero reasons for them to ice a basement level team, zero

They aren’t going to be a contender but they sure as hell weren’t as bad as their placing shows.

& they’ll be adding players to that roster, get internal growth and upgraded coaching.

Expecting them to be a bottom5 team next year is silly talk

The trade was made in part because Clarke was hurting Grans, not the other way around. There was little likelihood of Grans beating out the existing NHLers and prospects ahead of him, so he was traded when he still had some value. They didn't give him away. They traded his value for cap space that they valued even more.
