Crazy that he got past SJ. Werenski-Severson/Provorov-Fabbro is a pretty well balanced top 4.
Surprised Buffalo wouldn't throw a mid pick Nashville's way given that he'd be a perfect partner for Owen Power. Or Utah when they lost both Marino and Durzi and are absolutely dying for a Fabbro type defenseman. Hell I would take him on the Caps and we don't even need him. Maybe Trotz waived him quietly hoping to sneak him through like Poile tried with Tolvanen? Either way, another mark in the extremely sus Barry Trotz as GM decision column
Where would Barry even be trying to "sneak Fabbro through" to? He's like nearly thirty. He's not a, "send him down to the minors to develop" sorta guy.
Idk. I'm also kind of shocked he wasn't scooped up earlier in the waiver priority too. There's gotta be something else going on with him, right? Otherwise it's like..."wooo...free #4/5RHD". Which teams routinely pay a premium for at the deadline. Even though Fabbro isn't the most desired "type" of that player, he's still an entirely competent NHLer and it's not like he's got some hugely onerous contract that would deter teams. $2.5M might be a little bit too much for what he's done lately, but it's also not that big and expiring after this year, so you're on the hook for practically nothing if you're a bad team.
I do kind of wonder if San Jose being out of "retention slots" played a part in that aspect. They clearly aren't contenders this year...and without retention, Fabbro might be tough to move at the deadline. But it's still like..."free asset". Because he can actually play. Unless there's something
off the ice that some of these teams just don't want around their young, developing players.
