Claimed off Waivers: [CBJ] Blue Jackets claim D Dante Fabbro off waivers from the Predators

Eleven? That's surprising, because going by my reading of the CBA and the standings, literally half the league was in front of Columbus as of the time the claim order was placed. So either I'm interpreting something wrong, or there were a lot of playoff contender teams interested. (Probably the former.)
 
If Columbus re-waives him at some point this season, I could see Nashville letting him go to avoid the second year.

That's the number of claims made league wide this year. Nobody knows if any team after Columbus also put in a claim (other than the league office).

Sorry, that's the number of total successful claims in the season; Fabbro is the 11th player to claimed this season
Maybe I need a better way to phrase it...

And of those, the teams that could have claimed him with minimal cap concerns would be San Jose, Anaheim, Buffalo, and Columbus. It'd be a tight fit for Chicago, but they could have done it. Depending on what manner of fakery you choose to ignore the nuance of cap space accrual, Detroit has either barely enough or barely not enough. Montreal, Colorado, and NYI are all making heavy use of LTIR, so those complicated logistics may have gotten in the way. Everyone else appears to lack the available space.

Optimist... My oil now trade for provorov and jiricek stays in NHL. Win win

My guess is the latter

Werenski - Provorov and Christiansen - Severson have both been getting good results, it's the strength of the team at this point. I think Fabbro might not fit into the top 4 until after Provorov is traded.

If Jiricek keeps improving then he's not f***ed, and the AHL might be the best place for that.

My guess is Jiricek or Harris get sent down now and then later on in the year Provorov will be dealt and there'll be more room for Jiricek, who will hopefully have settled his game down by that point.

Surprised Buffalo wouldn't throw a mid pick Nashville's way given that he'd be a perfect partner for Owen Power. Or Utah when they lost both Marino and Durzi and are absolutely dying for a Fabbro type defenseman. Hell I would take him on the Caps and we don't even need him. Maybe Trotz waived him quietly hoping to sneak him through like Poile tried with Tolvanen? Either way, another mark in the extremely sus Barry Trotz as GM decision column

Where would Barry even be trying to "sneak Fabbro through" to? He's like nearly thirty. He's not a, "send him down to the minors to develop" sorta guy.


Idk. I'm also kind of shocked he wasn't scooped up earlier in the waiver priority too. There's gotta be something else going on with him, right? Otherwise it's like..."wooo...free #4/5RHD". Which teams routinely pay a premium for at the deadline. Even though Fabbro isn't the most desired "type" of that player, he's still an entirely competent NHLer and it's not like he's got some hugely onerous contract that would deter teams. $2.5M might be a little bit too much for what he's done lately, but it's also not that big and expiring after this year, so you're on the hook for practically nothing if you're a bad team.



I do kind of wonder if San Jose being out of "retention slots" played a part in that aspect. They clearly aren't contenders this year...and without retention, Fabbro might be tough to move at the deadline. But it's still like..."free asset". Because he can actually play. Unless there's something off the ice that some of these teams just don't want around their young, developing players.

Low risk, RD doesn't hurt, allows them to move Provorov

Just a big common sense move here. Looking forward to how he plays with Werenski, I think we will see Fabbro turn it around.
