Confirmed with Link: CBJ acquires Luke Kunin from San Jose for 2025 4th (STL)

Then take shots at Evason and Waddell (and Jarmo and past coaches), not Sillinger.

That's entirely what it is. I like Cole, he didn't run over my dog. I don't like that our org has blindspots when it comes to certain player types. From what I read about Kunin he might end up filling a similar niche where he is just like catnip to our coaches. Earlier I commented that I didn't think Kunin would play above the 4th line, based on his results, analytics, skillset. Then I had to revise that comment when I read more about the player and it occurred to me how they've used another player like this. I suppose I can just not mention that other player but folks are probably going to figure out who I meant and come after me anyways.

I think if you phrase is as “Kunin is a gritty player with holes in his game but he can play center and is well liked by his team mates. Evason seems to like guys like that - like Sillinger. Maybe he’ll be playing higher in the line up than he should because that seems to be Evason’s MO.” then that is fine.

inability to score

False and unnecessary shots at Sillinger are what bother me. If you meant it be be more of a shot at Evason than Sillinger, that is not what you wrote.

Okay, that sounds pretty close to what I wrote. I can see how I could have buried the Sillinger part a little bit more.

Also there are a good number of people on this board that would still be upset with me if I wrote what you just did.

Not complaining, just genuinely funny.

If you could win championships with good locker room guys who hit hard and have 0 offensive upside we would be bona fide contenders every single year.
yeah let's just ignore the whole "scoring lines" and "checking lines" thing that they've clearly been leaning into this season, particularly since monahan went down.

right now they're playing like one and a half scoring lines, one checking line, and a spare parts line. at least these additions make it so they can have two scoring and two checking lines. it gives them NHL bodies. that's fine.

if there's a concerning through-line to draw between kunin (and fischer!) and sillinger, it's that those guys were high-but-not-premium picks (kunin 15th, fischer 32nd) who produced at about a half point per game at an early age, but never hit the next level and are now solely checking line guys.

fischer's best season (33p in 79gp) came as a 20-year-old. kunin's (31p in 63gp) came as a 22-year-old.

I'm of the mind that sillinger is largely underrated among the fan base after a sophomore slump, and that is backed up by looking at how his production stands up to his peers, but I also think his value to the org ultimately lies as a valuable trade chip this summer.

if there's concern that he could have a similar arc (peaking early, defining himself as a checking-line effort guy, losing the offensive spark and settling in as a pesky bottom sixer) then there should be urgency to move him.

kunin 15th

Taking this in a completely different direction, do you know what Laine, PLD, Alex Nylander, Jake Bean, Luke Kunin (once he plays a game), and Fabbro have in common? (Hint: one of these days we need to claim Puljujarvi off waivers.)

peaking early

The entire franchise history we have certainly had an issue of guys peaking early (and/or poor development). Werenski is an amazing CBJ outlier who was good when young, got better (in 2019-2020 he led the NHL in goals for defensemen), and now at 27 is hitting a whole different level. This stands out so much that I think we are all shocked. I mean Boone Jenner statistically peaked in his 3rd season, Nash won his Rocket in his 2nd season, etc.

Kunin did have 1 particular year where he had 15 goals, 31 points in 63 games. If only I could remember who one of his coaches were in Minnesota.

You'd think after people being disappointed in things like only getting JVR or Nyquist in the past they'd atleast take moment to consider someone may do ok here. Olivier another one, many people scoffed at trading a 4th for him (I think I was one? can't remember for sure) but look at him now.
