I think people are ignoring this. Yes giving up a pick for a guy like Kunin isn't ideal, but when the coach knows a player that is immense. Better have a vet like Kunin on this particular team than a guy from Cleveland who should get more valuable time for them in the Calder Cup playoffs, whether its them playing in Cleveland or them playing with a vet who would have gotten the call, in Cleveland

Honestly not impressed but I guess that is the point, but I thought we wanted depth scoring. That’s not this guy.
If that's it then glad we didn't get caught up in the sweepstakes. Prices are too high.

But is it really? A reward??? Just watched some of his shifts over the past month and he doesn’t seem to do anything really well.
Would have preferred to keep the pick if prices were too high and do nothing.

If you could win championships with good locker room guys who hit hard and have 0 offensive upside we would be bona fide contenders every single year.
I actually liked some of the prices out there - Soucy for a 3rd for example.
Why not spend a 3rd on a useful player, rather than a 4th on a bad player? A 2nd for Nyquist would have been much more cost efficient than this Kunin trade.

Looking into it now - Kunin had his best season in his last year in Minnesota, the same year Evason moved up from assistant to head coach. He scored 2 goals in 4 playoff games that year.
The fact that he's been bad for five years since then is the more important information, but the Minnesota part of the story does help me understand why we are giving him a chance here.

One Mathieu Olivier was once acquired with a 4th round pick.

People want everything right now. I want everything for several years in the future. We are not a contender now. Getting back to the playoffs is a win if we can do it with this group of guys. Anything further is just pure magic.
The moves we want to make will happen after the season through free agency to help us be a real contender next season and in the future. Making a big move now is a Jarmo move. We don't need Jarmo moves to blow up the long term build.

He’s definitely not Olivier. Not a big guy, not fast, has an okay shot, and is a decent skater. Great on the forecheck? Not really. Always caught out of position defensively? Oh, definitely. And let’s not forget, he doesn’t score much either. But hey, he only cost us a 4th-round pick, and we’ve got way better players down in Cleveland.
Olivier arrived with a reputation as a tough guy, and everyone was aware of it—he certainly lived up to that image. However, the reality is that Kunin is currently just a fringe NHL player, not the depth scorer that fans were led to believe DW was targeting.

It's only not hard to like if you were expecting him to be the top 9 forward we were initially targeting to add. He is not that and for a 4th, he's simply depth. One thing this team can use help on is the PK and he has that going for him. He's been in a tough spot in San Jose the last few years so I'll keep that in mind. I wasn't expecting much, didn't get much and didn't lose much. It's the epitome of depth move. Could have done nothing and been fine too.
Point is...it's not worth being disappointed in a move that ultimately only provides a little depth. I don't mind it because I prefer to see guys like LDBB and Pyyhtia in Cleveland playing big roles in a playoff fight too. Nothing wrong with that.
