I mean it's one game, but TDA seemed to show up far beyond "average" last night. I didn't notice a single time he made a (Dougie) dumb play, didn't notice him out of position, did see him being very good at seeing the ice, passing and the PP with him on it was very good. Dougie is not VERY GOOD defensively. He's VERY GOOD at times, and WTF at times - add them together and it doesn't add up to VERY GOOD. Above average? Perhaps. If this is the TDA we'll see for the greater part of the season, this was a VERY good move for CAR re: Cap space, filling a lot of what Dougie brought (yes, probably less offense, but Dougie's CAREER production is about a half a point a game, if TDA puts up 30-40 points this year he's knocking on the same door)

I mean not too many observations from last night, as I mean the score speaks for itself.

That said.....

1 - Svech looked like a completely different player last night, in a good way. Physically out-muscling guys, completely torched the defense with his speed, made some really smart passes, and did it all with ease, and more importantly, looked like he was having a ton of fun. He did not look like he was fighting it at all last night. Not bad at all for Game 1 of an 8 year extension.

2 - Our puck movement in the offensive zone is something to see right now. Puck does not stay on a single stick for long, and they are finding open guys often. There isn't much standing around off the puck, either.

3 - Our PP looks a bit more potent than last year, and I think a big part of that is that we're more focused on getting the puck to our forwards, and driving the offensive play there, rather than trying to build it all off a cannon from the blue line. TDA is a very good distributer from the point, and when our first PP unit is out there, its all the PK can do to just hold on until the puck is cleared.

4 - Freddie had some struggles, but was also hung out to dry a bit. A lot of standing around on that last NYI goal. You expect Skjei and Pesce to be better than that, and they will be.

5 - As a whole, defensively we didn't look like we missed much of a beat yesterday. For those expecting the Canes to have a massive drop-off with the losses we had, it just doesn't look like that is going to happen at all this year. We absolutely shut the Isles down after they scored their 3rd goal.

On Kotkaniemi and the 1st line…

Still very early, but I have a feeling that Niederreiter and Kotkaniemi will swap lines, which would be fine. Aho’s line didn’t really generate much of anything 5-5, while each of the other 3 lines scored a 5-5 goal and Trocheck’s line in particular looked dominant.

With Kotkaniemi already (allegedly) being a player they can be trusted in his own end, he may fit in quite well with Staal and Fast in a shutdown role, while being able to also play the greasy, cycle game in the other team’s end.

Niederreiter already has chemistry with Necas and is hopefully motivated in a contract year, so I’d put him on the top line and profit.

Worth noting JK only played around 12 minutes and Necas only around 14 minutes...

Rod typically goes with the hot hand so that line got a little less ES time. The big swinger was special teams. Neither are on PP1 so got under 1 min of pp time each vs. 5+ min for Aho and svechnikov for example. Aho also had Pk time and they didn’t.

ESPN + and Nord VPN. 20 bucks a month.
There seems like such a discrepancy between different users on here as to which way works to watch the game. You are saying ESPN+ plus a VPN works, but someone else said last night that they couldn’t do that because ESPN detected the VPN and blocked it. @Negan4Coach couldn’t get the Bally app to work for him, but my son was able to use that last night to watch the game. It seems very variable as to the best way to stream right now.

It works. The ESPN playback of video sucks ass, but it works as expected. My guess is that the person experiencing difficulty just needs some coaching to get it operational.

If anyone would like said coaching, feel free to DM me.

Dougie is regular season Elite and couldn't give two shits in the playoffs

I'd take anybody over him

TDA is an upgrade

Agree with the playoffs comment plus frankly I don’t think Dougie has been the same player since his leg injury.

That said I think Dougie is an outstanding person and was a real credit to our organyzayshun the last few years and I wish him nothing but success with his new team (except when they’re playing us of course)….

I couldn’t use Bally but was able to watch the game on Hulu without a vpn (I have the Hulu/espn/Disney bundle). Im outside of Raleigh but still in NC though.

I thought someone had said the NHL package on DirecTV wasn’t a thing anymore … but I watched Ottawa on it last night.

Dumb question but have to ask...did the person use the VPN to set a different region or keep it local?

I loved him attempting the lacrosse move. Even with it missing, it shows that he's not overthinking it right now, which is great. Its a shame that it didn't go in, he just missed the net with the shot.
The crowd would have gone goddamn bonkers if he pulled it off. He still got a great cheer even after missing.

Yay one game in and we’re bringing up TDA’s politics and whether he is better than Hamilton. Going to be a long season if this is every game. Just enjoy a better game than expected from a player.

Fwiw, this was one of my concerns early on, that every conversation would be a referendum -- but in practice it's pretty easy to weed out the people who choose to put TDA at the center of the conversation for their own reasons.

I wouldn’t go quite that far. Every game he’s played so far, in addition to several really nice plays with the puck he’s also make some careless/sloppy turnovers in his own zone. It hasn’t bitten us yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Dougie used to do that exact same thing quite a bit, both of them usually involving some sort of lateral or diagonal pass-to-nobody when coming out from behind the net.
