They need 2 more young top 6 forwards including a center who can take over for Mik one day. Maybe not blow it up but make moves to accomplish those acquisitions as opposed to trying to win it all this year? Yes.
I agree. Especially about the center. The wing I think comes from in house IMO. Between Barron and Hopefully Korczak after him, we should have good cheap 3C talent.
I’m hoping all of Othmann, Berard, and Cuylle make an impact in 2 to 3 years, but we at least need 2 of the 3 to be players in secondary roles to provide abrasive play and offense.
I don’t think this should be a throw away season though.
Whether we like it or not, this team has some magic. I would add at the deadline. Smart short term moves that don’t empty the cupboard. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if shesty/Zibby/Panarin/kreider gets hot we win more then 1 round.
Gallant took a first year expansion team with not better center depth then us to the finals.
I wouldn’t be shocked if we caught some lightening in a bottle come playoff time. Though some guys are underperforming, we have a lot of quality pieces here.
The right amount of luck and bounces in the postseason and who knows!??
I do agree that this team as currently constructed isn’t a perennial year in and year out threat to go deep in the playoffs without some key moves.
For example, Tampa was built better, even when they were bounced early, you knew they had too much talent and would be back.
I don’t see why it’s an either or situation with us. Like either go for it with this squad, or trade off some key pieces for more youth.
We can still be a winning competitive team with a good culture.
Drury just has to continue to make the right trades and draft the right players.
The only move he’s made that I didn’t fully like was getting a 2nd instead of a 1st for Buch.
But we all know the host of reasons why, new contract, expensive wings signed already, kids coming, etc etc
Would I have like Kupari and 1st??? Sure, but Blais will help us beyond this season. I’m confident in that. Plus we tend to draft well in the 2nd rd.
If CBJ doesn’t go off the board with PLD, Buch is an Oiler right now, and Keller would be a homegrown ranger.
If we draft Kostin over Chytil, maybe we let Kreider go in trade depending on how he developed here, and we wind up with Robertson and 1st.
A ton of trades almost happen that never were. And those trades have a ripple effect on other moves that would have been made down the line.
It’s impossible to know what this team would look like if they trade Kreids or Buch a year or 2 earlier
