I don’t think that was an issue. He said he wanted to be here, he played like he wanted to be here, and we know he’s really tight with a lot of guys who are locked in here long term. I really think Adams/the Sabres just decided they didn’t want to pay him, and this is the result.

Lovely. Well thank you for crushing that optimism with honesty, I suppose, I cannot imagine Byram won’t play his best for such a stunning franchise.

I wonder if he's gettin a lot of interest on Joker? Despite what this board thinks, he might have some solid value, RFA, RD
His play has rebounded if power gets over the sophomore slump we are looking at a top 3 d core in 3 years with potential to have one of the deepest forward units

That's just it.... with Dahlin and Power around, they're going to be eating up minutes.

Nobody on this side of the trade really understands where Byram fits into the roster. We definitely didn't have a glaring need for him.
Adams' actual plan - remain the league's youngest team.

things I expect the GM to say:

1. Byram was the player we targeted.
2. Casey wanted an opportunity to be a 1/2 center.
3. We don't really care about LH/RH D.

They chose Cozens and Tage as their centers to be paid over 7 a year.

Byram is high risk high reward but dang another LHD.

Sure feels like there is no plan. What a wasted year only to flip Okposo/Johnson/Girgensons and get rid of our best offensive player in Mitts.

Who is saying Jokiharju holds no value? Haven't seen that.
Ok I misspoke by not including 'some on this board', Just sayin I still see a number of posters who don't acknowledge his rebound in play. Thinking he's just a 7 on a contender...and I have seen it, there is still some bias based on last season. It's not a big deal.

I mean why communicate like this? The point might not be right (it is speculative), but it makes sense. Changing up the personnel can have an effect on a squad, especially if that player was a prominent/popular player within the dressing room. To your point, it could backfire since Mitts was a hard worker/high effort player. It could also be a wake-up call that lack of effort led to a well liked teammate being traded away, and it could lead to a better effort as a group, if they want to be kept together long term. You may disagree of the likelihood of this happening, but it makes sense, and isn't objectively terrible. I don't know, maybe you have a history with the poster you're replying to.
Thank you, and for the record theres no history here as I rarely post. I was/am a big Mitts fan and while I don't agree with the risk the Sabres took in this trade, I can see at least why they made it as an attempt at a home run swing to fix their D longterm and have tried to be positive about it. But in response I get comments like this, and others telling us rarer posters to "get back under our rocks". Really great community here at HF Sabres these days, really makes folks want to stick around and be part of the discourse. Hopefully the respect and standards improve once the team does, whenever that will be.

It seems like he's the only one of their returning defense who has taken a step forward. That said, there was a long way to rebound and there are still some parts of his game that are troublesome to me like how he being off the PK has been part of the PK being so improved.

When they tried to play defense first in the beginning of the year…and it was a disaster….Joker was good. Team was terrible. Which…is exactly what happened when Ralph was here. Exactly the same. Then Granato acknowledged it wasn’t working and they tried to open it up and Joker went right back to being out of position and found himself scratched a few times.

Can we just agree that he isn’t good playing the way the team can actually be competitive at this point? The more open they play the worse he is. Send him to a heavily structured team and he’ll be great. But he won’t be great here if we play that way.

I'm sure I'm one of the people you're referring to because I've been posting about Joki and wanting to upgrade.

I also have acknowledged that he has played better this year and would not say he has no value.

He just isn't a difference maker and I think we need another difference maker on D. I'm hoping that's Byram. We'll see.

I don't think this was sending a message, or a cap move, or an indication they werent willing to sign Mitts. I think they wanted to improve the D and saw Mitts as expendable based on who they already have signed and who they have coming. Disagree with that all you want, but it's far from an absurd line of thought.
Adams has been looking to deal for a top 4 D for two trade deadlines. Two trades were nixed by players. So this is where he landed - had to give up something of value.

But the other points can be true too.

Are you serious? The message is louder and clearer if you actually trade the the person who underperforms. Like the ones the GM gave long term contracts to? You don’t trade performers, you trade your mistakes. And before the the gotta give to get crowd chimes in, we didn’t need Byram so we didn’t need to give up a c.
Did you even bother to read my original post? I like Mitts, and I mentioned this as a potential silver lining to a deal which I find holds too much risk. But maybe there'll be the off-ice positive of scaring a few stragglers on the team to taking things more seriously and being ready to play in October. Thats all I said.

Theres no way the Sabres would have tarnished what little reputation they have left in the league by trading one of Cozens or Thomspon, if thats what you are advocating in your post. Rightly or wrongly they view those players as future pillars who through either expectations (Cozens) or injury (Thompson) have had a rough year, and they will be who either turns this franchise around or let it sink. No more Okposo Dad, its their team and time now

For sure, my only point originally was I bet he's viewed more positively around the league than he has been on this board as a 24yr RFA RD, GM's are desperate for RDs.

In any event, I do wish Casey all the best. Great player who despite being part of a shit organization since he entered the league was willing to sign here long term. I hope he tears it up with the Avs.
Remember after his rookie season he was all amped up to get out on the golf course with his brothers and buds back in Minnesota, without a care in the world about being part of another failed Sabres' season? We waited years for that goofy kid to mature into the solid 2/3C that a Cup contender coveted, who's been the team's best and most consistent forward for a while now.

All that patience and Casey's perseverance finally paid off, and now he's gone, even though we all know he wanted to stay.

I'd love to see him get a Cup, not just for his own sake, but as a parting gfy to the management of this sad-sack franchise.
