Friedman: Carolina likely to offer an 8 year, $100+ M contract to Rantanen before the deadline

Still dreaming the Habs somehow sign him.

I know it won't happen, but until pen meets paper I'm going to continue to dream!

The nice part is that they have his (presumed) center in Aho also locked up for another 7 years so they won't have to worry about re-upping him in a year or two and needing to match Rantanen's number.

I think it ends up low 13s with Carolina. 15 for 7 years would be $105M. That same $105M over 8 years is $13.125.

I think they'll get it done between 13 and 13.25. And from what I've seen so far, Rantanen has a great cycle game that fits into Carolina's style perfectly even if he doesn't have MacKinnon flying down the middle anymore.

There is no reason for them to stop him. No rules against trading a pending UFA and then re-signing him that summer. We used to call that situation "The Tkachuk", because it happened to Keith so often.

I'm not up on the current CBA, but the rule used to be, that if a team trades for a player who they traded out earlier in the year, that player would be ineligible to play in the playoffs. I imagine it is still an active rule in some capacity, but I won't quote the CBA for sure.

Probably accurate. Would be funny to see Mikko not click in CAR then COL trades Ritchie and 2nd for him back and obv comes out of it all with Rants, Necas, and Drury.
 
Risky deal the Cane's made. Not sure it's enough $$ to sign him. Losing him in the off season ...or trading him for less than what they paid to get him would be a huge kick in the arse.

They should have made a trade for Pettersson/Miller instead.

To bad Carolina didn't decide to just get Miller instead of the secrecy crap. Would still have Necas for the playoff run and Miller.

By the way if I'm Rantanen I'm not signing the first piece of paper someone throws in front of me. If the Canes are offering $12.5 out of the gate that might just be the starting point. Don't be surprised if/when you do sign him you're in that $13.5/14 mil territory. There could be other things. Some players just don't like certain places or they have a favorite dream team. Maybe they just don't like the way they fit....the coach or his system. But if I'm the Canes GM none of that really matters now. If I'm the Canes GM I got to get this done. Got too much invested in getting this player to fail at signing him especially after last year with Guentzel.

They tried this negotiating with Guentzel, and it bit them in the ass. By the time they came to his price he was already out the door. Maybe Guentzel was never going to sign in Raleigh, but you have to think that'll influence how they negotiate with Rantanen.
 
Probably gets traded again before the deadline with another retention. Rantanen at 2.3M will tilt the ice for any contender

Since Mack was already doing all the heavy lifting and was on such a tear, he could kind of half-ass it at times and kind of get away with it because he was still putting up points. For me, this went on ALL of last season and pretty much almost all of this season as well though I think Mikko's been better this year than last year.​

So then, when Mikko would get placed on the 2nd line in order to try and balance out the scoring as we've seen at various times this season - it never worked because Rantanen knew that if it didn't work-out almost immediately, Bednar would just put him back with MacKinnon on the top line after a period or two anyways. It was never in his best interest to NOT play with Nate and to be honest, I think there are a TON of players of who have probably done the same.​

To be fair here - I don't think Nate cared AT ALL that he had to do the 'heavy lifting' or whatever. I think he just loved playing with Mikko.​

Even after ALL of that - C-Mac was still prepared to make Mikko the highest paid winger in the NHL. Imagine that, the highest paid winger in the cushiest spot possible.​

In the end, Mikko overplayed his hand. I'm quite certain he figured that he'd be there holding firm on his number in the wee hours of June 30th right before the start of free agency just like his pal Gabe was. I don't think he thought there was a chance in hell they would trade him during the season.​

In the past, Mikko has been able to elevate his game with MacKinnon out of the lineup but we haven't really seen that player since the Avs won the Cup. So in the end, it had nothing to do with the Avs 'being cheap' and everything to do with not overpaying for a player who's drive had maybe waned over time and they accurately evaluated it was better to move on, especially if you're getting a package with a player like Necas back in return. There's a chance Mikko gets his mojo back and wants to show the world that he's in that top tier and deserves top money - he's certainly talented enough to do it - but there's also a chance that he's got his Cup and now he wants his money and we'll see where that goes.

Excellent analysis. As a long time Avs fan going back to their first season, the Avs have always been a speed team that has often been referred to as "soft." (Except for that first season with Footer and the other Stanley Cup wins with Bourque and recently with E.J. and Manson on defense.)

This was a stroke of genius by GM MarcFarland in getting Carolina to trade two players - one very elite player in Marty Necas who has the speed and passing skills to skate with Mac and Drury, who has been a nice addition who is also very good on faceoffs. AND - - to get something before Rants went to free agency PLUS getting Carolina to accept Rants without a sign & trade deal in advance. ALL the risk is on Carolina. In fairness to them, I doubt Mikko would have agreed to a sign and trade deal and it might have annoyed him to the point of not even negotiating further with the Avs. There was talk that Rants would sign a more "hometown" agreement in the $11M/AAV area but I don't believe that at all. His agent was hell bent on $13M or $14M a year but Rants ain't no Leon Draisaitl.

What ESPN and all the other pundits do not understand about Mikko Rantanen is that he is NOT a physical player and he cannot create his own space and shot. Above all, Rants is an elite sniper who needs time and space to score goals. That space was created by MacKinnon on a nightly basis. He can occasionally get a tip in goal in front of the net but that's not his primary work area which is the right circle attack area to the left of the goalie.

Lastly, it's been absolute pleasure watching Necas and MacKinnon together and having two players on one line that can go end to end, with speed, and score while setting up other players, as well. When Makar is on the ice, that is three players with this ability and I do not believe any NHL team has anything comparable. I wish Mikko the best but I do not think he is a good fit in Carolina and he'll probably hold out for free agency and a $13/$14M AAV contract and the team of his choice.

Doesn’t mean they’re cheap. Call them arrogant about their risk tolerance with aging, if you want. However, the team is spending to the cap every year and Dundon committed a ton, for a small market, in bonuses last Summer. He’s been in it to win it for it.

Where did I say they're cheap?

Spend to the cap, don't spend to the cap. But constantly losing stud players to UFA isn't sustainable for a team that's on the cusp of being a contender
