Friedman: Carolina likely to offer an 8 year, $100+ M contract to Rantanen before the deadline

Canes have Aho, Svechnikov, Jarvis, Slavin all signed long term on top of having more cap space than pretty much any team in the league moving forward. Enough money in fact to get Rantanen signed at whatever he’ll end up getting, bring in a top 1RD, a big deal for a goalie, and still have money leftover to upgrade at 2C or anywhere else in the line up they’d like to. Not to forget arguably hockey’s hottest prospect not in the NHL ready to come over after the KHL season.

If being cheap means setting your club up for an extended competitive/contending window, I’m cool with Dundon being cheap.

So Rants is worth 12-12.5 easily but the line is drawn at 13-14? Lmfao who/what do they think they will get for that extra 500k-1.5mill?

A team that is in desperate need of a "star" to attract fans and has the cap space to sign Rants will bid on him. Especially since the cap will be going up nicely in the next two years.

You have to draw the line somewhere and considering the Canes have the 8 year vs 7 year advantage you're not going to just go 8 x 14 right off the bat. Of course they don't want to have a repeat of the Guentzel situation so I would think they will be more willing to move on the money line sooner in this case if it's needed.

I agree to some extent, but simultaneously if you are not a Free Agent draw and if you have the money, is nickle and diming one of the best performers (including playoffs) in the league in the last 5 years the way to go? Is it realistic for a guy to eat 1-2 mill that he would easily get on the market for a team he holds no allegiance to? Doesn't the team have to "go for it" at a certain point?
