That's true, I completely forgot about the Drury & picks part. Even so, my point remains. They will have something like 30 million in cap space this summer with their core in tact, and 4 1st rounders in the next 3 years. There's no reason this team can't be completely stacked going into next season.
Except there was no reason for them to not show something by now and every year there is disappointment.
Expectations aside, they ultimately got good value for Necas/Rantanen and they are set up very nicely to be contenders as soon as next season. You can't force players to want to stay long term. They can address every shortcoming via free agency or trade with the assets and cap space they have.
I think there’s an argument to be made that a team built around Aho-Staal-Slavin being the second winning-est club in the league over the past 6 seasons is a massive overperformance which has set unreasonable expectations that they have some other gear yet to be achieved. The ceiling on their performance largely comes down to not having the same level of talent as the other elite teams, even if they often win through a commitment to a disciplined method of play.
Svech is a weird case, though. He seems to have all the vital components of a star, including the mental seriousness and workmanlike attitude. When you watch him play, it seems like he’s just on the verge of doing something special but it never quite happens. For whatever reason, he seems to have plateaued just a little bit below stardom.
That's fair and they are probably the counterpoint to a team like the Oilers with 2 superstars or the Avs.
Totally agree I've always expected more from him, just don't understand it.
Every indication was that we had other moves lined up, but because Rantanen took so long to sign the Dallas extension, time ran out before we could make those other moves.

Two hours before the trade broke Rantanen texted Duchene the trade was done. So Tulsky had what? 4 hours to trade a first for Rakell…
It seems I am with the minority on this one. Stankoven has potential, and they got some picks too. Rantanen was disappointing, but he didn't work out for them. What can you do?
Necas was unhappy and probably gone anyway. Though the plan might have been to leverage the picks into something else, holding on to them might be a good way to retool for the future. The caps looked done only a little while ago... That being said, it might just be the excitement of magic beans talking. ;D

To be fair to both accounts, the trade being “done” from the player’s perspective does not mean the trade is actually formally complete.
Too bad the Stars had to give up Stankoven, would have rather offered Bourque. Or even better Dadanov.
Imagination the last several years they have plucked at the outsides.. the "core" stayed the same this year 3 of the prior core are gone Skjei, Pesce, Turbo. several other pieces being her for a year or more.
Same I'm a neutral fan, but people spinning this as a disaster for the Canes are wrong IMO.
Necas wanted out, so self rental? The Canes aren't exactly a FA market so losing him for nothing would be a disaster.
So you get Rantanen a clear potential upgrade, guy is bad and doesn't want to be there. Salvage what you can for him, again because you are not a FA market and the guy hasn't even lit it up to show he wants to be there.
So basically they took a situation where for sure they were going to lose a player and turned it into assets.
The team with Necas wasn't lighting it up and he already didn't do anything in 5 seasons.
The team with Rantanen was even worse and he made it clear he didn't want to be there.
So they got something from a situation that wasn't great. Necas forced their hand, then Rantanen. I think the mistake was haggling with Guentzel when you're already not a FA destination, but after that it's not their fault.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I considered Carolina a "contender" not long ago and they have really fallen off.
Whatever "core" is left isn't a contender and I'm starting to think upper MGMT/ownership is massively inept.

Carolina has picks and cap space. They can offer marner some $$$ and they can make trades with the picks they have acquired. They will be in a good spot after the playoffs.
Bennett + Ehlers would be my preference for the forward group and then they are also talking about re-signing Hall
