That was the plan but mikko the diva took too long to sign Dallas contact tying up the cap needed for a move that was apparently on the table.
So he’s supposed to do Carolina a solid and not take as much time as he wants to negotiate his next contract? Seems like sour grapes to blame mikko for that.

Well they did also trade Drury and a 2nd and 4th.

I'm not dialed in on the canes but I'm assuming Morrow and Nikishin will slide in for burns and Orlov but what other changes are expected in the offseason?

Nadeau looks to be a fine player down the road but is he ready?
That's true, I completely forgot about the Drury & picks part. Even so, my point remains. They will have something like 30 million in cap space this summer with their core in tact, and 4 1st rounders in the next 3 years. There's no reason this team can't be completely stacked going into next season.

Except there was no reason for them to not show something by now and every year there is disappointment.

Expectations aside, they ultimately got good value for Necas/Rantanen and they are set up very nicely to be contenders as soon as next season. You can't force players to want to stay long term. They can address every shortcoming via free agency or trade with the assets and cap space they have.

Agreed but the situation in Carolina is puzzling much like the trajectory of one of their players, Andrei Svechnikov who looked like a future star, he and the team have just disappointed.

The only saving grace this season is that they will probably play the lifeless Devils in the first round.

I think there’s an argument to be made that a team built around Aho-Staal-Slavin being the second winning-est club in the league over the past 6 seasons is a massive overperformance which has set unreasonable expectations that they have some other gear yet to be achieved. The ceiling on their performance largely comes down to not having the same level of talent as the other elite teams, even if they often win through a commitment to a disciplined method of play.

Svech is a weird case, though. He seems to have all the vital components of a star, including the mental seriousness and workmanlike attitude. When you watch him play, it seems like he’s just on the verge of doing something special but it never quite happens. For whatever reason, he seems to have plateaued just a little bit below stardom.

That's fair and they are probably the counterpoint to a team like the Oilers with 2 superstars or the Avs.

Totally agree I've always expected more from him, just don't understand it.

It seems I am with the minority on this one. Stankoven has potential, and they got some picks too. Rantanen was disappointing, but he didn't work out for them. What can you do?

Necas was unhappy and probably gone anyway. Though the plan might have been to leverage the picks into something else, holding on to them might be a good way to retool for the future. The caps looked done only a little while ago... That being said, it might just be the excitement of magic beans talking. ;D
