I’d highly recommend spending a significant amount of time in whatever city you’re potentially relocating to before diving in. If the PNW is on your list, go in February and make sure you still like it. I truly love that region but it’s really not for everyone.

Thanks! And you're right I was there in August. Much different than February.

So I got an interview with Amazon. The problem is that while the JD said NYC, it's for positions in other cities. While Seattle would be high on my list of cities to live in I don't know about making the move right now, I just bought an apartment for example. On the other hand I feel like I've been going through the motions lately.
I don’t know about the role, but for software engineering roles, their strategy is to have people interview for a generic role once a year, and if selected, they’ll offer you a position in wherever they think there’s a fit. You don’t apply for one specific role in one location/team.

Assuming it’s the same for whatever you interviewed for, I’d probably ignore what location you saw or let them know what region you’re interested in.

Interesting, they mentioned 4 locations and said if you're not interested in any of these locations, which location would you be interested in if it becomes available? They gave NYC as one of the examples. So I'll just let them know my preference in NYC and ask if that's possible or something remote.

BTW, the role is for Senior Financial Analyst.

Yeah so even if NY isn’t available, still do the interview. Second worst case scenario is you kill it and one random day in the future they reach out to you about an opening that you wanted.

So they told me they'll try to match me with a job in NYC if I get an offer. Also, it's not a phone screen, it's a one hour interview with the hiring manager.

Hey so i completly forgot that this thread was here and would have loved the support and advice you all have shown each other. Quick briefing about my past year hoping it can help maybe inspire who knows.

So for 9 years i worked as a field engineering consultant for a state agency (basically i over saw construction projects and made sure they are on time on budget and the project was built properly representing the owner). The pandemic hit the construction indusrty hard but a year later as the projects in 2020 for the most part were kept as was because the money was already allocated the 2021 money was shifted to other areas of need. Agencies like the MTA, PANYNJ, DOT's etc lost alot of money during the pandemic and needed money to cover bills. I got laid off in april of 2021 and gave my self 6 months to find a position i wanted. After 15 yrs killing myself in the field walking a construction site working long hrs nights and weekends it was time to push myself forward. At this poing 15 yrs in the industry with a degree in Civil Engineering and only working in the public sector i focused on Assistant PM/PM positions on the public side representing the owner.

After 6 months of basically no replies or the we are just looking for the future as we dont have any projects on the books i took a part time job working for UPS to get out of the house and not have to long of a gap on my resume. From october to mid feb i worked for ups until they let me got because i was technically a holiday hire.

I started to shift my search much broader during this time and even started lookjng at more entry level positions. As chance would have it my nieghbor was surveying his property and i struck up a conversation with the surveyor as i needed one as well. I told her my situation she knew some of the people ive worked with and she said she would ask around and shelll be in touch.

She emailed me a week later and gave me the contact information of someone that works for a contractor. I got a call on a Wednesday interview was on Monday, offer the next day and 6 days later i started. I'm now working in the private sector, i took a 20k pay cut but they gave me a company vehice and an ezpass to illeviate the travel and tolls and from what i understand the bonuses are good.

After yrs on 1 side of the aisle im now on the other. After being on the public side i know all the paperwork they submit but have no idea how they compile and produce it. Im now responsible for producing the paper work and doing all the leg work behind it and im excited to learn and grow in my career. The company is understanding and knows the difference and has been patient and showing me how things are done.

I posted this not as a brag but to say i started out looking for 1 thing but by a chance encounter and humbling my self some a i was able to go after a position that i didnt even think of and am now finding a new passion in my industry still doing the same basic work with new responsibilities.

I will say that during my yr off of work i did battle depression hard and was a miserable prick to my family. I lost motivation for alot of things and even debated changing careers all together.

I hope all that were in my position know you are not alone in what you face but there is always something out there if your mind is open to a small career shift or a bigger one if the situation calls for. I wish you all the best on your career search.

So I'm 99.9999% sure I bombed my Amazon interview. I feel really embarrassed by it and have been as down as I can remember from an interview in while. It's a different shitty feeling than thinking you did great and not going through. I feel just inept.

So here's the thing you never know. I've gotten jobs when i thought i absolutely bombed the interview and didn't get jobs where i thought i crushed it. What i can tell you from my experiences is that you need to keep your head up and don't get discouraged. There is a job out there for you and it will come. Take a step breath and keep moving forward. You've got this. Yes a lot of clichés in there but they are clichés for a reason

Thanks but I'm pretty good at knowing when I bombed. I do have a job right now so this was a luxury.

Maybe someone can offer some insight:

I'm currently negotiating a lease in the basement of an office building. Something like 4,000 sq feet but 3,300 usable sq ft. I get it, paying for access to elevators, hallways, parking etc. Not so worried about that. But they want $1200 per month for electric! The agent I'm going through says it's standard to charge $3.50 per sq ft because I'm apart of the building so I have to pay my fair share. Now I've spoken to other places that are warehouses or the basement of a building, and electric was like $100-200 depending on usage.
Does HVAC cost that much? The building runs the system from 8 am to 6 pm. Other than that I'll have lights, but max 12 hours per day. Is this expected or am I getting ripped off?

Yes. Typically in Commercial NYC office rent, you see anywhere from $3 and up to $4.50/sq ft for electricity. Is this a markup/profit for the landlord, typically yes. Don't know how high in demand the space is, but I would hope you could negotiate to $3, but the market supports this floor.

Now I don't know much about your space and the amount of shared common spaces/services (elevators, etc), but sometimes you can negotiate for sub-metering for actual usage with a fixed markup (~15-20%) for the landlord.

However, with the base generation cost for electricity (nearly 2x in the last 18 months), and ConEd's power purchase agreements to smooth rate hikes already gone, the actual rates may exceed $3/sq ft soon, and will only move higher in the near-term.

That sounds completely off the wall to me. My whole ass house is $123 a month, in line with other estimates you've heard.

Commercial buildings are different, I'm sure, but we're talking about a 900% increase.

See the post above. The 2020 average actual utility running cost of commercial properties nationally is ~$2.10/sq ft (where 2020 has a significantly lower based power price).

The OP didn't provide much context for his power profile as well as the building composition, but no one is powering a typical 4k sq ft commercial space for <$200/mo. If the site is already set for sub-metering or they will pay for the installation, they can pay for actual power plus a negotiated markup.

(also not involved at all on the real estate landlord side, but purchase 100MW+ of power annually)

I'm actually trying to get electric included.

This is my first time in commercial space and I don't know much. If we don't reach a mutual agreement I'll ask about the sub-metering. Even a client of mine who does HVAC says max I should be paying in electric for my size is $500.

Space is low demand, has been vacant for multiple years I believe, and if I move in I actually add value to the building so I'm pushing for everything in my favor.

Tomorrow’s my encore appearance in the Viking Tribunal on the North Atlantic Island of Fire & Ice. The entire line of Appeals Court Judges in the whole country has been disqualified in this case due to conflicts of interests due to partiality with the opposing party, my Tormenters aka The Fraudsters aka the Defendants, creating the need for a specific jury of 3 “judges” in this big case where none of the judges are really judges. Strange.. island laws

Good energy is gladly received and greatly appreciated…

If you get electric included in your rent, mind if I put some crypto mining rigs in your office?

Are you a lawyer or a judge?

I did something for the first time in my career the other day that I always used to be afraid of when I was in my early 20s. I interviewed a candidate. I thought it would be tougher on that end because I'd rather embarrass myself than embarrass my organization, but I feel like I have so much more freedom answering questions. I don't feel pressure to know everything and sometimes I say "I don't know". But it's personal and career growth for me, because at 23 I would have shit myself.
