It's actually kind of absurd that we managed to fully replace Hamilton with a guy on a near-minimum contract, which allowed us to steal a top prospect with an offer sheet. By all rights, we should have huge holes in the roster right now, based on where things stood a year ago.

The way we got here is some EA Sports bullshit that doesn't happen in real life.
What happened this past offseason is reason enough that we should just trust the front office going forward. I know we like to joke that sometimes people think they are smarter than everyone else, but at a certain point we hit so often on these things that maybe our front office just has something figured out that others don't. I mean, every move we've made in goal since the Borg took over has been panned by pundits, and every single one of those moves has hit. We were blasted for bringing on TDA, and that's been an absolute home run. KK is on a pace right now that by the end of the year could actually make the $6.1m contract look reasonable, which was unfathomable when it happened.

Sure, we've had a couple misses (Haula, Dzingle) and they were not afraid to cut bait and move on. At what point do we just admit that we actually have an elite front office that has proven capable of getting elite value out of the most marginal assets.

Thank you, but we are not.

Similar to another team in Tampa on the gridiron, I think there are some teams that have been there done that enough that you can look past their regular season and know that they'll be truly elite come playoff time. I think if you had to pick a favorite, the Lightning have shown they're it until they're not.

And it isn't that the ones that didn't work out aren't talented players, but rather (with the exception of Dzingel) they simply couldn't overcome injuries. These folks clearly seem to understand player evaluation, at least as far as the talent is concerned, better than the majority of the NHL FOs.

Well Im not sure there is "A" cup favorite, the Canes are certainly near the top of the list. Like in the top 4 (Avs, Bolts, Swamp Cats, and Canes in no particular order) these are the closest things to cup contenders in the league.
As I said in the main thread, if you asked me who was the favorite to come out of the East to get to the Finals, I'd pick the Canes, only because Florida and Tampa have to play each other to get to the ECF. I'd put those 3 as a pick-em to win it all.

When we win.

Even with our cerebral next level thinking a lot of luck and magic has to come together that they didn’t know would work. They money puck the best options they have and throw them in the mix with our core and hope for the best. As good as this is they could miss two or three years in a row and fire everyone. We chose a way to do things and have faith, just like every other team tries to do. It’s not just the front office, it’s Rod. It’s Slavin, a lot more than we like to admit. It’s Staal being the off ice guy making sure everyone fits in. We have no way to know that it all stays in place when one leg of the foundation leaves. So we just enjoy the fact all the magic worked out at least for one year so far, and that we’ve been competitive for three or four. Hopefully more.

We need another d. We look like a different team without Slavin and that’s not a good look for a contender. Another Hamilton to Pesce level player will go a long way.

Of course, it required yet another front office to make an incredibly ill-advised decision,

This, I think, is the secret sauce.

In addition to all the analytics and Moneyball and drafting and culture building and luck, etc etc etc, the one fundamental thing this team seems to be committed to is capturing undervalued assets. Go down our roster and see how many guys are on this team because some other club cut bait for non-hockey reasons. This front office is all-in on spotting those opportunities and taking advantage. It's the reason we come up as a rumor for every player, it's the reason we hear about them seriously considering Kane of all people. They don't appear to give a damn about anything other than "is this player worth more than the market is giving him?".

I can't prove it, but I strongly suspect that it comes from the top down. We have an owner whose career path has been finding undervalued assets and making a killing off of them. It seems like more than a coincidence that we suddenly started doing that after he was hired. It also makes me slightly afraid for what happens in the aftermath if this team closes the deal with a Cup run and the market suddenly thinks the Carolina Hurricanes are worth some inflated value.

When we win.

To me, what this all means is that we need to savor every single night like last night. Suck the marrow, eat the dessert. Take every opportunity to talk shit, make memes, dunk on our foes. Because this ain't gonna last forever and it's not so fun when the dice get cold.

These is the times.
