It's hard to muster up interest when your team isn't playing. Developing an emotional investment in the rest of the product is relatively easier when you have someone or something to cheer against.

For simplicity: Escrow is the amount put into an account that depending on where HRR is get's distributed to the player or the owner.. Basically the Salary cap is supposed to be just above what they expect 50% of HRR is. and the player make the owner "whole" it's so they hit that 50% exactly..

The players had many opportunities to reset the escrow debt to whatever extent, but chose to keep using the escalator. I guess it's a mix of paying it forward so the next round of players needing new contracts didn't get screwed with a flatter ceiling and looking at the top line number rather than the net. Marchand's $6.125 mil cap hit has never been reflective of his actual average salary.

Even with our cerebral next level thinking a lot of luck and magic has to come together that they didn’t know would work. They money puck the best options they have and throw them in the mix with our core and hope for the best. As good as this is they could miss two or three years in a row and fire everyone. We chose a way to do things and have faith, just like every other team tries to do. It’s not just the front office, it’s Rod. It’s Slavin, a lot more than we like to admit. It’s Staal being the off ice guy making sure everyone fits in. We have no way to know that it all stays in place when one leg of the foundation leaves. So we just enjoy the fact all the magic worked out at least for one year so far, and that we’ve been competitive for three or four. Hopefully more.


We need another d. We look like a different team without Slavin and that’s not a good look for a contender. Another Hamilton to Pesce level player will go a long way.
