He had some moments this season where he looked pretty bad and was off all year. Not bashing or doubting him and I believe he was one of the most underrated players in the league but he’s going to be 30, coming off of a bad year and his worst statistical season. Some regression may follow. Hard to gauge his value off of stats but he looked a bit off in games I saw this year.

I expect some regression as well but I think last season was below what we should expect due to him being hampered physically; if he can be a second pair defensive presence for Luke Hughes then thats perfect for us

Hamilton will play heavy offensive minutes 5v5 and Nemec is good enough to play 18-19 a night as well; Pesce could see 20-21atoi with a large amount of PK

He’s a game-changer for sure. Unfortunately for him and for the Caps, “winner” is not something I’d call him for the past 4-5 years as he’s legitimately been one of the worst defensive and then overall forwards in the NHL over that period. Kuznetsov is so talented that he can either take over and dominate, but he’s also been brutally inconsistent and the biggest reason the Caps stepped back a bit after 2018.

For the most part, but this is still helpful. It frees up a retention slot for this season and it gives them some wiggle room to be patient with Oshie. Without Kuznetsov’s cap off the book they’d have to clear salary if 77 decided to give it a go. And I think this will allow them to bank cap space which they couldn’t haven’t done before because of all the salary on LTIR.

There is no "motivated and in-shape" Kuzy, it's not part of his personality.

That easy going-ness absolutely contributed to his 2018 playoff run and successful seasons, but it also contributed to his downfall. Russell Westbrook-lite.

First cup for Ovi and WSH in general seems to have taken all the juice from that core. Like they lost all motivation since they achieved that ultimate prize.

Because it cheapens the responsibility of GM's handing out awful contracts. Players can in this day and age terminate their contract and then go play for a contender if they felt they were overpaid and didn't want to deal with that pressure.

Both parties have to agree to a MUTUAL buyout. Its pretty rare that guys walk away from 6 million.

The salary cap isn’t there to make sure GMs hand out good contracts. It’s there to ensure that teams all spend roughly the same amount on salary, within a certain range.

If a player decides to walk away from his contract, there’s no reason he would continue to be counted toward the cap. In fact it would create a pretty big problem with the NHLPA, seeing as it would reduce the amount of actual money paid to players.
