I think you'll find the ones saying this have been consistently saying it for the last 2 years.

There was a huge thread in the off-season about the validity of a Rantanen trade. The fan base was pretty split. He's a top-end talent but one that continually left you wanting more and it never made sense to pay him more than Mackinnon from an Avs POV. He's never shown consistently in his Avs tenure that he could carry a line by himself (at least for the last 2+ seasons). Clearly he played hardball so good luck to him.

Avs won the Cup because of their depth. Most teams do. Some teams with depth (like the Canes) need the top end talent to get them over the hump. Avs already have 2 of the best players in the world and need more cap space to supplement that. Win-win most likely.
Avs kept winning when Nate was injured. Avs have never shown to win without Rants. 11m/8years was a disrespectful offer for the new cap.

I think people are getting too excited. Carolina has marginally improved their offense but teams are a lot more than one player.

You don't know what you're talking about. Yes, Necas is a good player and in some sense there's not that much improvement in overall quality of Hurricanes-forwards. But Rantanen is one of the best goalscorers in the league (5th best I think in the last 5 years) and that's the team need for Carolina. They can dominate the game but just don't have that top end goalscoring. Now they have that.

What I learned from this thread is a lot of posters think Hall is still good and that the Hawks could have gotten more for him.

Reputable sources said if they just retained 50% on Hall they would have gotten a late third at best.

your post made me look at how often hall was scratched recently. he was a $6m cap dump and the 50% retention on rantanen saves chicago money and clears a contract spot

Welcome the "Helsinki Hurricanes".
Jääskä is the only Carolina player from Helsinki area. Rantanen is from Turku area (Nousiainen), Aho is from Oulu and Kotkaniemi from Pori. The difference between Helsinki and Turku is at least as big as the difference between Los Angeles and Miami or New York and Chicago.
From the outside looking in, Rantanen has always seemed under-appreciated by Colorado. How in the world you don’t bother ponying up for a player of his caliber is beyond me.
And MacKinnon probably one of the most overrated players in the league. In my opinion there could be two additional reasons why Rantanen wasn't very happy in Colorado. One is the goaltender lottery what they have been playing and the other one the fact that Rantanen had to play too much which resulted in him not being as sharpest always when it counted the most.

I do. A lack of evidence doesn’t suggest anything, so unsure why you are suggesting he’s most likely done.
I said there's a good chance he'll never get back to the level he was previously at if he gets back to the NHL at all. A lack of evidence suggests we have no idea when, if or how well his return will go. It's largely guessing, and the lack of previous examples of players returning to elite professional hockey or elite professional sport in general is at least somewhat concerning for his longterm outlook.

I would argue that one of the biggest reasons Carolina hasn't made a deep run is because they haven't had that one player. As good as Aho is, I find it hard to take a team with him as their #1 offensive threat seriously when it comes to Cup contenders. Rantanen however is much more convincing.

Mackinnon overrated is where I stopped reading

I doubled checked the thread from Thursday saying the Canes were going ro big hunting. 3rd or 4th post in the poster nailed.3 key parts of the trade

I think Rantanen is more like a PPG player on Carolina, but will be interesting to see. Can't fault any of the teams involved, looks like win/win/win.

Lol, I don't understand why people (and the Avs) get fixated on an exact salary number when it's always relative to the cap space. Rantanen could sign a 13.9 million contract and he would still be making less than Mackinnon, Matthews, Draisaitl and McDavid percentage-wise, so he would absolutely not be paid like the best player in the league. And if he signed a 13 million contract, there would be even more players that are more valuable than him, so that would probably be a more than fair pricetag for Rants.

And it's not like Carolina and Rantanen are even close to an extension. Carolina is known for its hardball negotiation tactics, and Rantanen commented that the trade came to him as a shock. There's probably still a long way to go before any contract is signed.

And lol also to the people who still think that Rantanen is only the product of MacKinnon. Sure, he has only played 46 career games without MacK with a stat line of 22+30=52, +22, but it's not like he's going to play alone in Carolina either. Sure, there will definitely be some adjustment to a new environment, a new system, new linemates and a new confrence, but he has a very smart two-way PPG center with him, who also happens to be his friend and fellow countryman. Even if his stats dropped a bit, it's not like he's going to fall of a cliff. And whose to say his stats couldn't even improve in a new environment with a better system and more even TOI?

The biggest mystery here is Chicago retaining 50% of Rantanen’s contract AND trading Hall… for a 3rd. What was Hall’s value? What was the value of retaining 50% on Rantanen? How are the two combined only worth a 3rd?
the option to offer sheet in the off season

I just don’t see how anyone on our side can see this as a win-win. Losing Mikko hurts a lot and there is no way in hell the current roster can be considered a cup contender without making another major deal. I’m curious to how the team reacts to this, especially MacK.

I was thinking about this too. They can easily delay him from starting until the playoffs and also trade for Miller.

I’m not betting against Sakic

Recent history would suggest you should

They were supposed to be the next dynasty after Cup win and he managed to kill their depth. The way they’ve had to play Mack& Rantanen in the regular season they’ve had nothing left in the post season
