Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

The biggest mystery here is Chicago retaining 50% of Rantanen’s contract AND trading Hall… for a 3rd. What was Hall’s value? What was the value of retaining 50% on Rantanen? How are the two combined only worth a 3rd?
See it like this; the Hawks would've had to retain on Hall anyway no matter where he was dealt. But the max is 50% (so in this case, 3M).

So they retain on Rantanen instead and due to his bigger cap hit are allowed to retain more so the Canes can squeeze everyone in and give them the 3rd round pick.

Clearly at this point in time, Hall @ 3M didn't have any better deals out there. So this is just the Hawks getting anything they can for Hall.

I'm not surprised he has barely any value at this point. He missed basically the entirety of last year and has earned himself 15mins of ice time per game on arguably the worst team in the League along with being a healthy scratch a couple of times.

If he was playing like a legit top 6er then it'd be a different story.

Tell that to Florida trading Jonathan Huberdeau. Everyone blasted them at the time. Seems like it worked out?
That is absolutely false lol. The general consensus was, that Florida would take an L for maybe the next year or two, but Tkachuck would probably end up being the better player.

What's the idea behind this @Murzu As a childhood friend and president of the Mikko Rantanen fanclub you probably have some more info about this? Why go to the Hurricanes as a rental? You know he's not going to be able to get the big money deal from them because the Hurricanes are really cheap. Aho is good and can carry Rantanen but he's not MacKinnon and Makar combined good. And who's going to be able to afford 14 million per year this offseason besides my Leafs, maybe the Rangers? Is Rantanen going for the money instead of a spot in the Hall of fame, because a move like this will make it very unlikely that he'll make the Hall of fame...

Mikko was suprised but motivated by this trade. He WILL be a beast the next few months, while going for the ultimate goal: a big fat paycheck.

As a bonus, he can finally put dressing on his salad without the fear of MacKinnon being around.

I love @Mulletman

Also no more Ismo Lehkonen calling out his summer training

One thing I am concerned to see is Rantanens defensive liability. That WILL NOT fly in Carolina under Rod the Bod. If Rant can adjust (or is willing to) he can INFLATE further his worth going forward in FA.

Interestingly, If he wanted to be a jerk, he could learn his 2-way game under Brin'd'amour and really ask for that 14M he's seeking.

If I were Carolina, I'd be thinking about that....and get his arse signed right now if at all possible.

I honestly do not think he stays in Carolina, unless his fellow countrymen can convince him to. It's going to be really interesting to see how he takes to Carolina's coaching ways....

Less than a year ago Necas was pretty much worthless. Colorado really just dumped one of the best players in the league for a guy who had a hot start but is already coming back down to earth.

Avs could have lost Rantanen for nothing. Would that have been better?

Interesting trade...Carolina adding a lot of offense....Like Drury's all around game good depth player imo...Sucks for the Devils Canes gonna be an even tougher out....

I get that his hands have been somewhat tied due to the cap but I have not been impressed with Chris MacFarland since taking the reins of GM.

I am now. His team/management drew a line for his player. Once they knew he wasn’t going over and no deal was to be had.

He makes the move and gets assets back.
how many lose their players as “own rentals” or trade for ufa who don’t sign (cough Toronto).

As a leafs fan. If we are/were at an impasse with Marner.

I would take that return for him in a heartbeat rather than get knocked out in round 1 with him for the 8th time and watch him leave for nothing.

This was the right move for the team.

During the past 5 years Rantanen has played the 3rd most average minutes of any forward in the league while also being responsible to generate Avs' offence with MacKinnon. How do you do that without giving up some defence?

I wouldn't be the least concerned about his fit with Brind'Amour and Carolina. Actually quite the opposite, I think a better system and a more even playing time will benefit his overall play.

This will be interesting, especially as Necas has gotten a lot better and I'd expect playing with MacKinnon and Makar will give him another boost.

Colorado just saw Reinhart take less to fall in line with barkov and tkachuk. Rants didn’t want to do the same with Colorado so sakic said See ya!

I am more talking about his responses to coaching, not how much his slider/knobs are turned splitting his amount of Offense vs Defense is.

I for certain realize that if your sole focus is offense, your defense will suffer. That's just pure logic.

I am curious if he likes Brin'd'amour, and if he plays the system they have implemented; -- that will IMO have a huge effect on his next contract regardless. I think most teams would want a 200ft player(The Barkov standard) more than a PURE scorer.

Jääskä is the only Carolina player from Helsinki area. Rantanen is from Turku area (Nousiainen), Aho is from Oulu and Kotkaniemi from Pori. The difference between Helsinki and Turku is at least as big as the difference between Los Angeles and Miami or New York and Chicago.
I've seen some shitty takes on this site but this one has to take the cake. Yikes. Besides, who the f*ck cares?

Well first a UFA getting Necas , Drury and picks is a good haul

If Raantanen wasn’t a ufa I think it’s not enough

Just compare this to what Guentzel returned
