See it like this; the Hawks would've had to retain on Hall anyway no matter where he was dealt. But the max is 50% (so in this case, 3M).The biggest mystery here is Chicago retaining 50% of Rantanen’s contract AND trading Hall… for a 3rd. What was Hall’s value? What was the value of retaining 50% on Rantanen? How are the two combined only worth a 3rd?
So they retain on Rantanen instead and due to his bigger cap hit are allowed to retain more so the Canes can squeeze everyone in and give them the 3rd round pick.
Clearly at this point in time, Hall @ 3M didn't have any better deals out there. So this is just the Hawks getting anything they can for Hall.
I'm not surprised he has barely any value at this point. He missed basically the entirety of last year and has earned himself 15mins of ice time per game on arguably the worst team in the League along with being a healthy scratch a couple of times.
If he was playing like a legit top 6er then it'd be a different story.
