Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

Wow, possibly the most offensively talented player to don a hurricanes jersey. (Not counting players past their prime that joined the franchise)

It'll be intriguing to see if he'll produce at a similar rate without MacKinnon and Makar. I think he can.. but I guess we'll find out

This was my first thought too. Have the Hurricanes ever had a forward as good as Rantanen? Eric Staal was a terrific center, but I don't know if they've ever had a weapon this potent in their forward group?

I like the gutsiness from both parties to this trade.

Any chance this is related to rumours that dubas can begin selling and mean Crosby is coming to the Avs?

I get why the Avs couldn't or wouldn't pay Mikko 14 million but will the Canes? I guess they're hoping he'll take a discount if he enjoys playing with his buddy Aho?

Anyhow this is a win win, a true blockbuster. Avs get their 2C, Canes get an elite winger/playoff performer and us fans get a major trade which brings excitement.

The HF Hamster Wheel is working overtime with this news

It was very considerate of Tulsky and McFarland/Sakic to wait until all the updates were done and HFB was back to normal before making this trade :sarcasm:

It hurts so see a beloved player, and one of the best power forwards in the league, getting traded.... No question about that.

Right now the AVS got weaker.

The other side to this: They made the best of it and got a good return for a pending UFA. I´d rather take the picks and Necas, who is a speedster and has potential, than lose Rantanen for nothing.

Making such trades is never easy, but both teams went for it. Carolina going all in and hopes that Rants can get them over the hump, and Colorado with some cap relief and picks... I doubt that CMac is done and there is something more to come here.....

In the end, it is what it is. Sometimes there are though and hard decisions to be made.....

I imagine having Necas under contract for two playoff runs was a big plus for them, vs potentially only one with Rantanen.

That is absolutely false lol. The general consensus was, that Florida would take an L for maybe the next year or two, but Tkachuck would probably end up being the better player.
Go back and look at the thread. I just did. Vast majority called it a window saving trade for Calgary and Florida was silly and overpaid.

Also no more Ismo Lehkonen calling out his summer training

Face is blurred out but anyways... Mikko Rantanen

do they have the plan to hand out an offer sheet this summer?

While it's possible, the pick they got was 2025 so irrelevant to any offer sheet this summer.

In the short term, a lot of people (myself included) thought it was a win for the Flames, especially considering the circumstances. And a lot of people (myself included), thought it would take a few years for Tkachuk to mature and to replace Weegar on defence.

However, the majority still liked the trade for Florida when it came to the future. Turns out, future came out faster than predicted for Florida, and Huberdeau completely bombed out in Calgary.

Wow I would be pissed if I was colorado fan.

Seems like part of the colorado fanbase is already coping hard: "he wasn't that good to begin with, only feasting trough mac & makar" etc. XD
Most of us have been saying it for over a year. Go look in the Avs board. Mikko is not the same player he was 18-22. He gets points sure but put him on a line without Mack and he’s absolutely terrible and liability defensively.

I’ve said for years…. Absolutely no way I’m paying him 13+.

wow, what a blockbuster move for carolina. if they can keep rantanen, they really win this trade. avs get a decent return despite the downgrade at wing, but it seems like yet another frugal move when they had three of the best players in the league. feels like they should be going for the cup instead of focusing on future playoff runs and draft picks. getting only 1 cup during mackinnon's window seems like opportunity wasted and this seemingly puts them further from contending status. if they bring in more support, this won't look as bad, but it'll have to be a big move to offset this.

To state the obvious, Colorado are/were in the top 5 most likely teams to win the cup this year. Maybe top 3. Don't you run it back in this situation? Just let Rantanen walk in free agency for a chance at a cup? I think I would. This is madness.
