Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

You sign Rants to 14M+, that is the starting price for Makar (add in an extra million or two), since he is worth more. Say good bye to any real depth

Makar is/was always going to set the new market for Dmen

Whether or not Colorado paid Rantanen

& all of you Colorado fans don’t have certainty that he wouldn’t have signed for less than 14M. That just helps you to sleep better and cope

Starting price is always different than the final number, you should very well know none of these guys start from the number they’ll accept and Colorado didn’t go back to Rantanen just decided to trade him

So you really have no clue about the 14M being set on stone by Rantanen

As a Wild fan, I never viewed Rantanen as an elite level player. Certainly every team in the league would absolutely take him, he’s a good player, but his deficiencies stand out playing alongside who I think is the best player in the league in McKinnon just at forward position and likely the best defenseman in the league in Makar. He’s a long ways off from their levels in talent and commitment but gets a massive benefit of being able to find his role there.

He’s going to be another good player in a sea of good players in Carolina but I don’t see him producing at Colorado levels and I’d be very concerned with giving him the deal it will likely require for production on a team that he will no longer be on (for Carolina or any team in FA).

How Necas fits in on the Avs will be interesting. Will be on him get to a level he hasn’t been pushed to before.

Sounds like Necas is junk at center. I’m sure Malkin prefers to stay in Pitt but he would make sense for the Avs.

14 is the clear comp right now. It’s not like it’s being pulled out of thin air. There’s a contract out there to point to. If you think Rantanen can’t get $14 on July 1, you’re out to lunch.

for what the hawks gave up you'd almost think getting their own 3rd back is part of a plan to offer sheet someone but the sane person in me thinks there is no way the hawks should be offersheeting someone if it in any way involves their 1st.

But Sakic did have clue.

If true, that's crazy. Dude is good, but that's top 3 in the league type money.

When stuff like this comes out people need to remember that an ask in negotiations doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where they expect to end up.

They may have been asking for $14 and I’m assuming they expected to negotiate to somewhere around Draisaitl’s contract. That doesn’t seem particularly unreasonable in light of where the caps going.

Final push for the Canes.

This does put the knife on throat, but then again, you can't endlessly try with the same combination. Since the only TDL trade that somehow worked in the last ~30 years, in the whole league, was Gaborik to Kings, my guess is that they don't have enough time to acclimatize Rantanen and will end up not signing him either.
Final push? lol.

I’m very curious if there is a Seth Jones trade coming with retention. Hence the weird retention here to trade Hall at full cap and retain on Rantanen.
hawks scouting the avs 5+ games and end up taking nothing from the avs. there is definitely a big piece of that trade missing. every piece i think of for a seth jones swap is either too valuable, not valuable enough, or would just create another hole. i really wish these hockey insiders looked into this a bit more.

Any chance this is related to rumours that dubas can begin selling and mean Crosby is coming to the Avs?

What a nightmare scenario for Penguins fans.

Imagine being able to stock the cupboards by having veteran guys like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson as trade chips, but having a GM like Kyle Dubas to make those trades?

Yikes.

I think Carolina makes a lot of sense long term. They have the sunbelt discount and he can be with a lot of Finnish friends.

This feels like another case of teams being weird about paying non Swedish European players.
