Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

I don't think Rantanen puts up 100pts again playing in Rod's defensive system. But he's still good for 80-85pts every season. Bednar runs an offensive system and it hugely benefits their top guys.

A franchise player that had considerable lesser points for four seasons prior. He had one season over a PPG while the piece going to Calgary just had 115 points and crushed PPG for four straight seasons. Hindsight is easy

That’s not true

Tkachuk was a top tier talent at the time of the trade

My issue with the trade was the added 1st round pick, other than that it was a home run trade from the start

Yeah. Chicago is the most puzzling team here.

I see the rationale from the other sides. CAR is taking the big swing and going all-in. They need a true finisher. They got another useful player in Hall. COL doesn't think they're gonna re-sign Rantanen so they replace him with Necas - who while inferior, I think his skating/transition ability will fit the Avs really well.

Chicago trades Hall AND retains $4+M for.....a third round pick. Seems pretty light.

So let's imagine for a moment Carolina just took Hall to make the numbers work and wanted to flip him.

What value could Carolina get for an unretained Hall?

What value could Carolina get for a 50% retained Hall?

Do you genuinely think that is a 2nd round pick or more?

As an Avs fan. I’m disappointed but I understand it. And as long as CMac has something else cooking I’ll think we are fine. I really like Necas. And his speed is fantastic with Mack. But he is no Rantanen. Salary cap exists and Makar is more important.

I’m going to miss him falling down all over the ice and looking completely inept but having a 3 point game.

😢 Rantanen sounds like the perfect Devil with that description as all our guys skate like that.

What I learned from this thread is a lot of posters think Hall is still good and that the Hawks could have gotten more for him.

Reputable sources said if they just retained 50% on Hall they would have gotten a late third at best.

Exactly.

On a different note I hear Crosby is pretty jazzed up about the possibility of playing with Nils Juntorp so look for the Canes to make that happen.

Yep

Colorado fans show up here and suddenly explain how Rants is past his prime and easily replaced as a top6 winger

Basically half the wingers are just as good
Past his prime haha wtf? I wanna see who said that. I don't think there's an Avs fan that is thrilled by this in the short term we clearly downgraded but at least we did something about it instead of being handcuffed comes July 1st. I also don't think there's a single Avs fan that was OK giving Rantanen 14M$.

The only negative thing I can say on Rantanen is that he tends to be floating and look lazy then you look at the boxscore he has a freaking 3pts night that makes you say "HOW?". When he is on he can be the best player in the game. I wonder how he gonna look in a new system without Mackinnon same with how Mack will look without Rants.

But Sakic did have clue.

If you believe the pro’s he really didn’t

Just more sounds like he was low balling him

For the crowd that say this was to extend the window for Colorado?

Mackinnon is 29y, 30y next season. Their window is the next 3-4 years. I don’t see how this trade helps that window at all, they didn’t gain any futures to use in the follow up trades and are lacking a franchise winger now

Go look and you’ll see plenty of comments he’s not what he used to be, this or that player is better than him

The problem in Colorado was that they played Mackinnon& Rantanen like top pair defenseman. You can’t play those minutes as forwards and be all in for every shift for 82 games

They traded a 28 year old for 26 and 24 year old players, added a 2nd and a 4th, and created cap room this year and for the next 3-4 years.

Since when is a franchise winger a necessity when you already have a franchise center and franchise dman?

That's probably some pissed Avs fans I could've said the same yesterday IMO  You probably won't like my answer but if Rantanen was able to drive his own line he would've been played away from Mack but he couldn't do it. So best to have the duo producing together with increased ice time when Mitts line doesn't do anything.

You don't see it because you're not a fan of the team. You have no idea what's good for us because what you really care about is what's good for Rantanen (a Finn)

we found KD's burner account.. I mean the TDL is Monday right? RIGHT??? So you know for fact that's the most they could have gotten meanwhile injuries, trades, ,make teams more desperate to go all in as TDL approaches but hey KD is the smartest GM in the room

Knowing Hall's injury history there was no guarantee he would be healthy either when the TDL rolls around and they could have ended up with nothing. People are making too much of the return. It is fine.

Hawks still have cap space and a salary retention spot available for more deals running up to the TDL and no one knows if there could be other agreed upon arrangements yet to materialize.

Necas isn’t Mikko level. He’s been great. But he’s not that. And I'm not sure I trust him to be a playoff boss like Moose.

If there isn’t something really, really significant coming with Necas, it’s bad value for a team with one goal this year.

And…you still gotta freaking pay Necas soon anyways.
I love Nachos but I agree.

Necas biggest problem is getting to the dirty areas and is the biggest thing holding him back in the playoffs. To be fair he spent a lot of his time dodging Troubas elbows the past couple playoffs.

Either way I'll miss Nachos and his speed will be fun to watch on the Avs.

Avs obviously did not think they would sign Mikko at a price and term that the AVS wanted...Avs gain 2 years of youth as Martin is 26 and Mikko 28 not to mention Drury is 24 so AVS do get younger and have more pieces to potentially extend the Avs window. Can't wait to see where Necas is slotted in the lineup... Will be intereesting to see how Mikko plays in Rod Brindamour's system. He most certainly will be on the first line with Aho you would have to think...Hawks get to rid Hall and his contract and open up a roster spot for the ever auditioning youth that are appearing in the system. Seems like Nazar is up to stay in Chicago as well as a few others potentially (dach, riechel). Retaining on Salary is easy for chicago at this point in the rebuild.

I think Colorado sees that Landeskog has no intention of LTIRetiring and is going to play, and knew that there was no way to fit Rantanen under their cap at anywhere near the price that he wanted without parting with some major assets.

How does Chicago pull the trigger on being included in that deal. Big retention and they dump Hall off. Hall’s value that low?
Chicago made off better retaining 50% on Rattanen and trading Hall at full value

Vs

Trading Hall at 50% retained only

Especially since Rattanen base Salary real dollars is 6 million 3 plus million less than his 9 mill + cap hit.
