Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

Assuming this was the first of the moves the Avs are planning I like it. If this is all they do then I don't see it moving the needle much in either direction.

It hurts so see a beloved player, and one of the best power forwards in the league, getting traded.... No question about that.

Right now the AVS got weaker.

The other side to this: They made the best of it and got a good return for a pending UFA. I´d rather take the picks and Necas, who is a speedster and has potential, than lose Rantanen for nothing.

Making such trades is never easy, but both teams went for it. Carolina going all in and hopes that Rants can get them over the hump, and Colorado with some cap relief and picks... I doubt that CMac is done and there is something more to come here.....

In the end, it is what it is. Sometimes there are though and hard decisions to be made.....

Final push for the Canes.

This does put the knife on throat, but then again, you can't endlessly try with the same combination. Since the only TDL trade that somehow worked in the last ~30 years, in the whole league, was Gaborik to Kings, my guess is that they don't have enough time to acclimatize Rantanen and will end up not signing him either.

I’m not sure if this has been brought up, but I find it very interesting that CAR went for the UFA to be vs one of VAN’s centers with term. If reports are true, they likely could have added 7 yrs of Pettersson at a similar price. Rantanen is undoubtedly a better player but carries huge risk as a UFA. Pettersson also was arguably a better “fit” as a C vs wing.

Anyway, I type all this to say, the Canes are in a prime position to keep Rantanen. They will have roughly $30M in space this summer with really only the 1RD and goalie spots to worry about. It’s on them to make this gamble pay off by opening up the purse strings on an extension. I hope they learned their lesson with Guentzel about messing around looking for the discount.

Seems like they just got tired of waiting and want instant results.

Rantanen arguably didn't give AV's enough discount, so his next contract should be around ~14M and the Canes obviously have calculated this in to their decision.

So from the Blackhawks' perspective, if we ignore Rantanen, they essentially traded Taylor Hall with 77.1% of his salary retained, and received a third round pick.

No matter how I look at it, that's just an extremely bad trade. Even if Hall is washed, you're telling me a third is all he's worth at a 1.375mil cap hit? There's just no way.

Did Chicago just get a 3rd for both Hall and retaining 50% on Rantanen? Seems light on their end.

When I saw the deal last night, it seemed like a light return for Colorado and a steal by Carolina. The added pick does help it a bit for Colorado but it’s still pretty mid. Necas is going to produce a ton in Colorado, but he’s a UFA after next year and they’ll be in the same position next year with him as they were with Rantanen. Drury is a meh piece as well.

I think it’s clear that there was a major disconnect between the Ave and Rantanen. Have to think they probably had a MacKinnon internal cap and Mikko didn’t dig it.

Avs kept winning when Nate was injured. Avs have never shown to win without Rants. 11m/8years was a disrespectful offer for the new cap.
Rantenan has never missed any meaningful time…. And when was mackinnon hurt the year they won the cup with an absolutely stacked forward group?

#Cope. Rantanen has been a 100p+ pace forward every year and will continue to be for about five-six more years. You guys just traded him for a 50p guy because your GM didn't want to increase his contract offer by 1.5m when the cap's going up 20M+ in the next 2 years. Good one. Nice cap savings. Please continue trying to spin that as somekind of a winning move. Entertainment is what this place is all about.

Friedman reported (or was it Kypreos?) that Rantanen had turned down 11.25x8 earlier this season. So the gap was probably pretty big.

This is what you call going for it. This is not a nuanced adding a veteran 3rd line W type move. A quite good team just got a needle moving player.

Dundon really wants a Cup.

After missing out on extending Guentzel by playing stupid games (and also having that happen during the GM transition) I would hope the Canes have learned their lesson are fully invested in making it work with Rants. Full 8 years and a contract that is at least $13m per has to be where they expect this to start, and he's worth it. Some may be skeptical that they would do it, but things are very clearly different in Carolina right now under Tulsky so throw what you know about how we operate out the door.

I'm sure Necas will be good for Colorado but man he can be the most frustrating player sometimes. When he's on, every time he touches the puck it goes in the net. His heaters go supernova. But the problem is that he burns out quick and when he's not on he'll be one of the worst players on the ice. And it's like he spends about half the year in either state, but somehow manages to play his worst when the stakes ramp up. I do trust that MacKinnon will rip his ass apart if he tries to heropuck it in Colorado like he did here, so that's probably going to be extremely good for his career going forward.

Wow, possibly the most offensively talented player to don a hurricanes jersey. (Not counting players past their prime that joined the franchise)

It'll be intriguing to see if he'll produce at a similar rate without MacKinnon and Makar. I think he can.. but I guess we'll find out

Chicago gives away Hall, do retention and get third rounder? I can not get it. That's a bad GMing from GM of the Blackhawks.

It's our own third back, which is basically a late 2nd. Hall has been horrible, so getting a 2nd for him alone wasn't likely.

The way I look at it, we retained on Rantanen to upgrade 20 spots on draft night.

Maybe could've gotten a little better value, but not by much.
