Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

Rantanen is obviously looking to get PAID. If Colorado couldn't swing it and saw no other solution besides getting assets back do we have to assume this is just a rental for Carolina? They got outbid for their own free agent in Guentzel last year...

Reading some of these takes makes you think that Rantanen is a defensive scrub only feasting off MacKinnon and Makar, and should roughly be off the league in a few years.
I think of his 66 points, 57 were when Mack was on the ice. The other 9. 6/9 were empty net goal points.

We will see how he does without Mack. When your are asking for 14 million you better show you can drive a line. He could not.

I think pasta is better he gets points no matter who he with . Hes lighting up with morgan geekie at the moment.

Sick trade by Carolina. As long as they re-sign him.

I wonder if they go shopping for even more to go all-in. They have their 1st, Nikishin, and a couple other nice prospects...

This trade reminds me a lot of the Tkachuk trade. The amount of people calling it a win for Calgary was hilarious when Huberdeau had his best season ever and never came close to that again.

Necas having his best season ever while Rantanen is on pace for 3rd straight 100 point season. Necas is a good player but he's not close to as good as Rantanen.
Calgary traded for Huberdeau expect in to get their franchise star

Colorado traded for necas to get hopefully a 75-90 point player back. So anywhere From 2nd-3rd best forward and 3-4th best player. Also saved money and got assets to make another run

This could turn out well…or as you said very poorly, but there’s less pressure to perform on necas than Huberdeau

Yeah, this year he has been leeching of MacKinnon. In the previous years, this hasn't been the case at all. Mikko has basically had identical production with or without MacKinnon 5v5.

So many Avs fans forget how Mikko carried the time when Nate was injured multiple times.

That's a blockbuster trade... nobody has seen this coming.

Hard to tell who won this trade...will be fun to watch which team will be unhappy soon...or maybe it pans out for everybody...Hall must be awful if he only gets a third and on top retention.

Welcome the "Helsinki Hurricanes".

Big fan of Chicago taking a L.

Bedard is going to be stuck with a bunch of jobbers for a very long time.
Yeah. Chicago is the most puzzling team here.

I see the rationale from the other sides. CAR is taking the big swing and going all-in. They need a true finisher. They got another useful player in Hall. COL doesn't think they're gonna re-sign Rantanen so they replace him with Necas - who while inferior, I think his skating/transition ability will fit the Avs really well.

Chicago trades Hall AND retains $4+M for.....a third round pick. Seems pretty light.

I mean the irony is that the actual comp (if you believe there are parallels here) is the opposite of that. Rantanen is the older, bigger name player arguably past his absolutely scoring peak about to get paid as one of the top 5 biggest contracts in the league while Necas is the younger guy putting up a great season that people are doubting. And there are a lot more people screaming here that this is initially a big win for Carolina than for Colorado. So I see the public, popular opinion narrative exactly the opposite of how you framed it.

Pretty good chance this trade doesn’t fit that narrative in any way at the end of the day. But…
Agree with your take. As a Stars fan at first I was glad to see Rantanen out of Colorado but his 5 on 5 play has fallen and his AAV would’ve really crippled them.

Necas hasn’t put up numbers like Rantanen but he’s younger, cheaper (including a full season next season) and the Avs get more assets to make another big move; and should be able to extend Necas. He’s also now on a more offensive style team and going to be playing with MacKinnon and Makar.

edit - saw this as an even trade originally (with no extension to Rantanen) but with the info on @Czechboy post at #682 I see Colorado winning this trade overtime.

Holy hell. Was not expecting this.

Hate to see Necas leaving, but figured it was likely after contact negotiations last summer.

But Rantanen in exchange? Yeah, I'm fine with that.

I like this for both Carolina and Colorado. Very interested to see Necas and MacKinnon together, as well as Aho and Rantanen.

Curious what else Tulsky has planned

I really can't wait to see the Rantanen contract.

At least they didn't walk him into UFA but he's a top 3 winger?

Even if he comes in at 13 million, is it a bad contract?

I think he obviously wanted more than MacKinnon.

Dude is having his 5th straight season at a pace of 100 points or more.

The only winger in the league that's better is Kucherov.

Shouldn’t be surprising.
Salary cap for MacKinnon’s first year of extension was $83.5 million and from everything we have heard the salary cap in the first year of Rantanen’s next deal could be as high as $97 million. Thats a huge difference.

Less than a year ago Necas was pretty much worthless. Colorado really just dumped one of the best players in the league for a guy who had a hot start but is already coming back down to earth.

As an Avs fan. I’m disappointed but I understand it. And as long as CMac has something else cooking I’ll think we are fine. I really like Necas. And his speed is fantastic with Mack. But he is no Rantanen. Salary cap exists and Makar is more important.

I’m going to miss him falling down all over the ice and looking completely inept but having a 3 point game.
