Even if he comes in at 13 million, is it a bad contract?

I think he obviously wanted more than MacKinnon.

Dude is having his 5th straight season at a pace of 100 points or more.

The only winger in the league that's better is Kucherov.
We don't really know where the negotiations stood with the Avs when the trade took place. The only concrete number we know, is that earlier in the season the Avs offered 11.25M per for 8 years, and Rantanen turned that down. That is a serious lowball for Rantanen, but we don't know if he could've settled for something in the 12s, less than MacKinnon OR if he was really looking to blow past MacKinnon.

For most teams no, he will be worth it. We cannot afford it however so yes it would be “bad” for us.

What a crazy trade to wake up to.

Avs couldn't pay him $12-14m and made the right decision to cash in rather than just let him walk.

Carolina get a star which they've needed. With Hall, Orlov and Burns all UFAs they have at least $19m to play with in cap space in the summer, before any other trades.

Necas is good but his numbers for the first two months of the season vs since then are stark. He has reverted back to being a solid 60pt player but hopefully he can kick on again alongside MacKinnon.

I like this from both sides.

Here is a trade no one saw coming. If you can find the thread of the Canes adding both players, please post it.

Rantanen is also UFA

Necas production this season is basically on par with Rantanen, if you take away his 10+ empty net points.

He's played like dog shit defensively for the last 2 months, and has been pretty weak on the puck / lazy overall

Necas can fly, and he will look really good on Mack's wing, and cab fill in on 2C when needed.

This is the right move for the Avs. Having Mikko walk, would have been a massive issue.

A few insiders are saying that Colorado isn't done, so who knows what this roster will look like by the deadline.

Good trade.

This will have huge impact on Mackinnons numbers and the avs dont look like they are going for the cup this year. Who on earth are they even considering that could fill the massive gap Rantanen leaves in them? Avs were allwaya still winning even tho Mack was out of the lineup, but when Mikko was out they were not. It will be interesting to see but im sad for the Avs, Necas is good but not good enough.

As as a fan of Rantanen, this makes me sad. Hard to imagine seeing him play for other teams. But as a Finn, it is quite fun to see a "team Finland" trade to another Finnish heavy team.

It sounded like Rantanen was playing hardball, but I wonder if he actually wanted this.

Paying Rantanen that wouldn't kill your depth. The cap is about to explode for several years in a row. Expectations are only going up. Locking up elite players is going to favor the team, even if there is some overpay
Paying the 13th or 14th best player in the league like he's the best player in the league doesn't favor the team even if the cap is going up. Draisaitl has the biggest deal and he's playing like the best playing the league. Rantanen isn't better than McDavid, Matthews or MacKinnon. Why does he deserve more because the cap went up?

Wow I would be pissed if I was colorado fan.

Seems like part of the colorado fanbase is already coping hard: "he wasn't that good to begin with, only feasting trough mac & makar" etc. XD

This could benefit both the Avs and Canes. Neither needs to be the loser there.

But man... did they have pictures of Kyle Davidson mud wresting naked or somethin'?

Absolutely horrible move by the Hawks.

I think you'll find the ones saying this have been consistently saying it for the last 2 years.

There was a huge thread in the off-season about the validity of a Rantanen trade. The fan base was pretty split. He's a top-end talent but one that continually left you wanting more and it never made sense to pay him more than Mackinnon from an Avs POV. He's never shown consistently in his Avs tenure that he could carry a line by himself (at least for the last 2+ seasons). Clearly he played hardball so good luck to him.

Avs won the Cup because of their depth. Most teams do. Some teams with depth (like the Canes) need the top end talent to get them over the hump. Avs already have 2 of the best players in the world and need more cap space to supplement that. Win-win most likely.

They will pay him. They have so much cap space.

Besides. It's not like necas was going to stay past next season.
Makes you kind of wonder, why they didnt pay Guentzel or weren't willing to pay for Necas. But if it turns out they can extend Rantanen, this should be a good trade for them

There are certain players that makes exceptions to your rule. Perhaps they felt Rantanen was the exception. Guentzel and Necas didn't move the needle enough.

With most teams I'd assume giving up a signed player the caliber of Necas for a rental means 13-14M x 8yrs is coming for Rantanen, in this case not so sure.

We saw them move on from a costly acquisition in Guentzel last season, who seemed like a great fit. Dundon plays hardball.. so who knows.
With the cap going up a lot the next 2 years a 13m contract is just fine. Only reason the Avs didnt do it is because of their 'internal' cap that says noone can make more than Nate.

The numbers make all the sense while the players favour Carolina. It's a well constructed trade though. Hats off to all involved.

Somehow this makes me think Avs are not done AND Landeskog is coming back.

You're saying Matthews and MacKinnon are better players than Crosby in his hayday? There's no sense they're making so much more money than him back then, right?
