I'll also say.. the big loser is Chicago here. I'm not seeing the gain and think they could've used the cap space for more.

I’m not saying it’s a huge win but they did Hall a solid by trading him to a contender, Voided the risk of him getting hurt, and re-acquired their own 3rd rounder (1st or 2nd of the round.). Basically the same value as a late 2nd.

Getting their 3rd back also gives them the ability to offer sheet another player in the $4M to $10M range.

I don't follow. Why in the world would Colorado do this?

Help me out here Avs fans because trades like this don't just happen.
Colorado wasn't willing to pay one of the best wingers in the league like one of the best wingers in the league because they're dead set on Mack being the highest paid player on the team. Or something to that tune.

No it's not, as much as I love Rants he is nowhere near what Sakic or Forsberg means

Rantanen has been a huge part of the Avs core for the last decade. You don't let go of superstars who just put up back to back 100+ pt seasons unless the return is too good to turn down. I think this one will sting for Avs fans. The Avs are no longer the offensive juggernaut that they once were.

Avs should have been asking for Svechnikov instead of Necas.

Yes. He was awesome in October and November. He couldn't miss. And that was really the reason we got off to that blistering start.

He will be missed in Raleighwood.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the thought process was on this. Replacing Rantanens offense is gonna be challenging.

The biggest mystery here is Chicago retaining 50% of Rantanen’s contract AND trading Hall… for a 3rd. What was Hall’s value? What was the value of retaining 50% on Rantanen? How are the two combined only worth a 3rd?
This is just a guess but you can only have 50 contracts and Chicago wants room as they have young guys to sign before season is over. These young guys would probably play in Rockford

Svech+Mac would be an exciting line.

Giving Rants 14M+ a year was not the play from the Avs point of view, he is not worth that when you have Makar right behind then using that as a "base" and adding a million or two because he is worth that much more than Rants. Avs went the depth route, shall see what else they have planned

Wow, that's an amazing deal for Colorado.

I don't know what Carolina is doing with this trade. Like sure, they got the best player for this year, but they gave up Necas for a rental? I know he only has one additional year, but I still think that's a valuable part of the equation.

If they re-sign Rantanen, I guess it becomes a lot more palatable, but it would seem that if you're Carolina the plan is to get a lot better and not get a little better. Yeah, Rantanen is a great player, but Necas is pretty good. That's a loss for them without a doubt.

The rest of the deal is basically just whatever. Not much important was involved.

Think Colorado made the most of a bad situation.
