From the outside looking in, Rantanen has always seemed under-appreciated by Colorado. How in the world you don’t bother ponying up for a player of his caliber is beyond me.

The Avs must think Necas is still chugging along at the clip where he had 37 points in his first 22 games, and not his true self that has 18 in his past 27.

Carolina pulled off a hell of a coup. Wonder if MacKinnon is pissed.
Yeah Necas' start to the season is obviously an anomaly (and it was obvious in his underlying metrics). I don't see any world where this isn't a massive downgrade for Colorado. They'd better utilize that difference in cap space extraordinarily well or they're a much worse team now and going forward with this deal.

But it’s not just that. It’s Necas + an 8 million dollar player for what just Mikko is asking for just next year.

Necas actually has more 5v5 points this year will 200 less minutes. What will he do with Mack? Idk, I really like it for the Avs.
Where's the $8m player coming from? Saying a player got less ice-time is a weird flex. You think those extra 4 mins a game Mikko plays are wasted??? Also, in both the reg season and playoffs, PP points count, so no idea why you're discounting them.

Necas contract situation is wild too

2 more years till Ufa.

If he performs this and next at his current level you're looking at 11m per. If he drops, he's probably looking at 8m per. Do you keep him either way?

My guess is the Avs will try to extend him prior to the start of next season, so he only gets a few months of MacKflation :D

Between $8-9 million is an absolute no-brainer. As far as how high it could get - we need to see him in his new surrounds for a bit.

Sounds good for the AVS but if he performs, i dont think hes in any hurry to sign considering he held out with Carolina.

Rants next season wants 14 million.. Necas makes 6.5 .. that is 7.5 million. 7.5 can get some pretty good players.

Rantanen has always been underrated. He carried the offensive load everytime when MacKinnon went down to injury. Now Colorado no longer has Rantanen to lean on.

Expect MacKinnons numbers to drop a bit and even Makar's too. This is a sad day for Colorado fans. It's like them losing Sakic or Forsberg during their prime.

He should take it as COL wanting to be ready and able to pay him whatever the hell he asks
He was getting paid no matter what, I just mean in the sense of they just sent their 2nd best forward out the door... what does that mean for being competitive over the course of the Makar/MacKinnon prime? Chasing middle class UFAs? I don't know the ongoings of the Avalanche locker room but I could see how players may view it as a step backwards for what is only a speculative and hopeful two steps forward in the future.

Avalanche must still have something up their sleeve. They're not trading and extending a goalie only to be dumping a top ten player considering they're already weak up front.

Cap inflation alone will exceed Makar's contract increase. It just rarely ever works out when you're trading a superstar for a good, but not great player. Maybe if Landeskog can ever get back playing at the level he was at then you could afford to lose Rantanen, but I have serious doubts after a meniscus replacement that he'll be much of an impact player if he even plays again.

lmao.....ok. based off what?

Expecting too much from a Miller trade, much? I thought Mittlestadt + Drury + picks might be pushing it... Both players are young, signed multiple years beyond this one, and Mitts has 2 previous 60 point seasons, basically

as a nucks fan, thought ur value was accurate

Sure that’s why I said “try” :D

Considering part of the headache here was not being able to agree with Mikko before his walk year and seeing as how quickly they got Blackwood tied up after they got him, I think the FO in Denver will be incentivized to work out an extension by Necas by this summer/fall when he becomes eligible.

No it's not, as much as I love Rants he is nowhere near what Sakic or Forsberg means

MacK is not the type of personality that is gonna get whiny about not having somebody around. If anything, he will be more motivated than ever to carry this team.

It’s not like the Avs are dumping Rantanen for picks. He’d be a lot more pissed if they let Rantanen walk or screwed up their cap structure so much that Joel Kiviranta was playing on his wing like he was earlier this year.

MacK’s a big boy. He’s the ultimate alpha. He will be fine. The idea that he’s shook and pouting in a corner crying into his bowl of quinoa and heirloom tomatoes because he has to now play with a 6-2 speedster with silky vision is nonsense.

My mind is blown.

I encourage Avs fans to avoid checking Necas's shooting percentage when he was among the league leaders in goals/points. Also recommend you not check his playoff numbers.
