74% WAR is far from "stud" territory. That's barely average for a 2nd liner.

Is is probably one of the most lopsided bad trades I've seen since, well, Matt Tkachuk. This is gonna send the Avs into a freefall.

Frank Mahovlich in 1968 and 1971, and Phil Esposito in 1975 come to mind.

After that?

The big deals I can think of were in the off-season.

Maybe Doug Gilmour in 1992, but he was no Rantanen.

Gretzky, Roy, Thornton, Forsberg, Selanne, Jagr, and Tkachuk have all been traded mid-season.

Expect Colorado's offense to dip, they just lost a 100pt winger. Tough to replace that. Necas is a good but not a great player.

From the outside looking in, Rantanen has always seemed under-appreciated by Colorado. How in the world you don’t bother ponying up for a player of his caliber is beyond me.

The Avs must think Necas is still chugging along at the clip where he had 37 points in his first 22 games, and not his true self that has 18 in his past 27.

Carolina pulled off a hell of a coup. Wonder if MacKinnon is pissed.

Colorado tried him there at least a few times, but it never really stuck. Not all that surprising given that his defensive game is rather poor, but he's one of the best offensive wingers in the league so that's probably where he should be played.
