So saros hasnt been great...

Annunen has gotten 7 starts and came in 2 times over the 23 games since being acquired. That's a 25 start per season pace which would give saros only 57 starts (his lowest start rate since becoming a starter). Part of that may be that we have had 3 back to backs in that timeframe another part may be that Saros has been buns over that timeframe even with 2 SO his sv% is .883 and GAA is 3.24. I know the team defense has been beyond lousy at times but that is hard to stomach for the price tag. If he were making 2-3 million, i can handle that but he isnt

I wonder if Saros is realizing just how much of a disaster he has hitched his 9 year wagon to, in the same way we're all vice versa-ing on that? :dunno:

Anyway, our team is still garbage despite the illusory recent pseudo-surge, and Saros is still a pretty capable and reliable NHL starting goalie in a league where that's not a super common thing anymore. We were absolute fools to sign him to that contract, but he could definitely still help some team out there who has a relatively near-term window and needs that stability in their playoff run.

I still nominate the Edmonton Oilers. They have $3.54M Cap Space today, given LTIRing Evander Kane, and we're more than half-way through the season, so they could actually just slide in Saros at his current $5M pro-rated. They might be a little bit stressed about where their Cap is going after this season, given the raise coming to Evan Bouchard, but they'll also lose Jeff Skinner and Klingberg, and it might be a fairly significant Cap rise across the league next season. If they additionally included their struggling young goalie Stuart Skinner and his $2.6M back to us, or heck, even the dump of the Evander Kane LTIRetirement contract, I'm in.

Saros
for
S.Skinner + E.Kane

We get nothing out of it, pretty much, aside from escaping from the Saros contract. Which is a huge loss compared to where we could have been a calendar year ago if we had instead kept Askarov and traded Saros for a haul. But whatever. It is what it is now. We shouldn't pile 8 more years of loss onto it, it doesn't get any better after this. Skinner and Kane contracts are up after next season. Maybe Skinner is fine for us while we re-tool, maybe Kane can just stay on LTIR anyway. But then we're open for business after that... we can watch for a goalie, draft Ravensbergen with our Vegas pick, maybe see what Annunen can do with more time and protect him if needed in an Expansion Draft, etc. I think that flexibility would be great for us. And again, I have always been a big booster of Saros as a goalie. Nothing against him, I suspect he might actually be the missing ingredient that gets Edmonton a Stanley Cup. If he and Ekholm and Arvy actually won a Cup there, that'd be pretty cool.

If we lost Askarov because we signed Saros a year early to that dumb extension, then trade Saros for no/negative value five months later, I will probably check out from this team for a while

From my seat in the peanut gallery... uh, no, "most of us" did most definitely NOT know that during the off-season. It was a very precious few of us who did! :naughty:
You and I were on the same page for not wanting to re-sign him. What we disagreed on was if he re-signed, what the terms were. This was a big mistake and there is a chance to get out of it but you're going to get pennies on the dollar for him when we could've unloaded him 2.5 seasons ago and gotten a decent haul.
