Has any team bungled a superstar core so hard, yet still lucked into a cup?
How did they bungle a superstar core?

Also, how did they luck their way into a cup? They’re a great team and they beat everybody required in honest fashion to win.

The superstar core thing doesn’t work. Not in salary cap hockey. See Toronto for evidence. You either take a team friendly discount or leave. Up until eichel won a cup, no team won with any skater making over 9.5m

I'm not suggesting he will become Tage Thompson.

If he becomes a 40-50 point physical 3C, that's a fantastic piece. Colorado has a good eye for pro scouting over the last few years. So it wouldn't surprise me to see him put it together there in some way.
The implication was he has time to become a more impactful player. Most would agree that he is what he is at this point. He's going to hover between 30-40 points a season for the prime years of his career and not be a significant driver of play in any regard.

Friedman said no extension currently -- although I think the Canes have to open the account for this one after losing on Guentzel last season.
Carolina has a lot of cap opening this off-season:
Orlov (7.75M)
Burns (5.28M)
Roslovic (2.8M)
Hall (6M)
Andersen (3.4M)
edit: And Rantanen (4.625M with Chicago retention)

Yes, they will need to replace some of those, but that's ~$29.5M in cap space to play with.

And with Nikishin coming in and Nadeau and Unger Sorem in the AHL, they have options to replace some of these on ELC and have space to offer Rantanen a huge number.
