Legit don't see the problem. The Blackhawks just got anything for cap space they don't need. And that anything could turn into a 10-year NHL player if their scouting department does their job.

I mean it is hard to think that Hall 50% retained would get a 2nd round pick. A 3rd was probably the most they could hope for.

So this deal effectively is like they traded Hall for 57% retained (in real dollars). That is basically it. The real dollars are marginally more (Rantanen base is $6m vs $5.25m for Hall - prorated of course) as mentioned above is like $115k or so.

Side note that leaves 1 more retention spot for Chicago. I mistakenly included a buyout since they are lumped in the same section as retention on PuckPedia.

So the deal leaves them a little more room to facilitate another deal and buy another pick.
