You have to think this comes with an agreed extension.. no way Carolina gives up that much for a rental. Holy smokes. Don’t mind the return of the Avs at all, they are a well run org

A lot of successful teams have done it in the past. The idea is that if you’re basing everything off the market, then you’re going to consistently struggle to get ahead. Everyone taking a little less falling behind their best player allows the team to stay strong.

Sure, but there's nuance to that. $13-$14m would still be "less" relative to cap growth, if it does hit $97m next year. In a couple years Makar is almost certainly going to be well past that if the cap is in the $110m+ range. Are they going to trade him too?

Colorado didn't expect these guys to take less than Mackinnon when he was on his ~$6m deal because obviously that would have been absurd because that deal was signed under a very different context to what Mackinnon became. Less extreme situation, but similar now.

Did you just say 15 for Rantanen? I know prices are going up but thats probably more what Kaprizov will sign for. Rants in the 12.5 range would be fine, I think.
15 has been the rumor. Would I was hearing was that the Avs were refusing to go above Mac’s contract and that’s what the impasse was.

Biggest difference is Makar is worth more than Macks current cap hit, Rants is not (at least on the Avs) and if the Avs wanted to be able to have any depth alongside them

With Mikko out it opens the gates for a Halifax Mooseheads storyline 2.0 in Colorado. Drouin's role just got massively increased. He's been sick ever since joining COL. Rejuvenated. More dynamic, engaged in all 3 zones and goes to the rough areas.

That’s a bit of a different circumstance given Crosby’s number affinity, but they also never had anyone make more than either of them until Karlsson.

Well, yeah, they only had 2 players at that level. Most teams don't have 3 or 4 players than can be the highest paid salary at once.

Look at Colorado. Rantanen jumped over MacKinnon. Makar jumped over MacKinnon. MacKinnon jumped to the league's highest salary. Rantanen's turn came up and they said no thanks. Of course when contracts are signed makes a difference - why were Rantanen and Makar both making more the MacK for the majority of their careers?

Your scenerio doesn't happen often because it's not often you have two of the league's top players who sign contracts on different years under different caps. Like Kane and Toews were signed to the same contracts *at the same time*. The latter being the key point.

sure hope Colorado is able to re-sign Rantanen because this is a huge loss for them If Rantanen doesn't go back to Colorado this summer.
Near 0% chance imo. They would've just kept him if they felt they could or wanted to afford him.

Only way he comes home is he misses Colorado and will take what they originally offered.

I don't fall for the Carolina hype. They are pretenders every year who are extremely desperate for a cup.

They wouldn't do this deal if that was the plan. COL wasn't going to pay what Rantanen could fetch on open market

Friedman just tweeted that Colorado gets the 2nd but Chicago gets both Ryder and Halak.
