Carolina is in a great position to re-sign Rantanen.

Everybody is locked in for multiple years and they have cap flexibility. So even if they have to overpay to keep Rantanen, it is unlikely to disrupt their salary structure because their earliest big contract coming up isn't for another 4 seasons with Sverchnikov. Even if Rantanen wants something like 15 million, in 4 years cap inflation will make it so that is much less disruptive to their salary structure.

Colorado has Makar coming up in 2027. So if Rantanen comes in at 15M+, Makar is getting more.

Seems pretty good for both teams honestly.

Avs did quite well given the situation with Mikko being a UFA in a few months and the tough cap situation they're in right now. Getting a PPG Forward with term is actually quite a shock for a UFA, even one as good as Rantanen IMO. The rest of the stuff is basically just good fluff that I'd bet the Avs probably just use elsewhere now.

If the Canes can re-sign Mikko, this looks good for them as well, though I would have some serious hesitancy about Mikko Rantanen at a $14M evaluation for 8 years. We really dont know how much of a product of Mackinnon he was, but we are absolutely about to find out one way or the other.

Very curious to see what else the Avs do. Its hard to fathom they still have more up their sleeves given the plethora of deals we've already made this year. But that's also precisely why you just cant doubt CMac has more cooking at this stage.

Do they go after Miller or Pettersson now? Seth Jones in Chicago? f***ing Sidney Crosby? Who knows, but at this stage I wouldn't suggest anything is impossible with the way Chris MacFarland has decided to start operating this year.

No doubt, stars are a rare breed you can't really replace. And as another fan I'd feel the same way.

I'm curious how this shakes out with the Avs. Still stand by my feeling I'd rather have the depth than the $14m winger that doesn't play with the hustle he used to.

But Avs have MacK and Makar, if they only had Rants I'd probably feel differently. Remember they have to pay Makar ungodly money in a couple years too.
Cap inflation alone will exceed Makar's contract increase. It just rarely ever works out when you're trading a superstar for a good, but not great player. Maybe if Landeskog can ever get back playing at the level he was at then you could afford to lose Rantanen, but I have serious doubts after a meniscus replacement that he'll be much of an impact player if he even plays again.

Whether he's worth $14m or whatever is a separate question, but arbitrarily limiting salaries based on what you're paying someone else when the cap is increasing every year, especially over the next few years, seems like a really silly way to manage a team.

A lot of successful teams have done it in the past. The idea is that if you’re basing everything off the market, then you’re going to consistently struggle to get ahead. Everyone taking a little less falling behind their best player allows the team to stay strong.

Jeez. Maybe you're right.
Realistically, he was going to be traded for a 3rd anyway.

Assuming they are only retaining on rants (which is what I have seen).

This saves them about a million bucks in real money, gets them probably the 1st pick of the 3rd round, and they don't risk Hall getting hurt in the meantime.

I did not have this one my bingo. I actually like this from both sides. Rantanen is a rental, no way the Canes pay him what he wanted. The Avs balked at his demands and the Canes wouldn’t give 9mil to Guentzal. Obvious he’s the best player now. But Necas is a very good piece coming back. Canes are gunning for a run this year. Hall and Rants are good pickups for them.

I don't think Malkin making more than Crosby hurt Pittsburgh too much

The biggest mystery here is Chicago retaining 50% of Rantanen’s contract AND trading Hall… for a 3rd. What was Hall’s value? What was the value of retaining 50% on Rantanen? How are the two combined only worth a 3rd?
Helps the tank? Guess they just wanted to get rid of Hall, didn't care what they got back -- the lack of his presence on the roster is the real value here from that standpoint.

Did you just say 15 for Rantanen? I know prices are going up but thats probably more what Kaprizov will sign for. Rants in the 12.5 range would be fine, I think.

I'd have reservations on calling Necas a point per game player. This is the first season he's currently doing it, and if his second half continues similar to his past 2 months then he won't finish a point per game player.
