Not that we lost this trade or anything, but I worry that huge question marks in goal again will shipwreck an otherwise promising roster. Would have been much more comfortable with us bringing back Johnson. Hope Lack proves me wrong, but I think he's the 5th best goaltender in our organization presently.

Just noticed that 2 of the 3 goalies who climb the 3-Yr SV% rankings the most when adjusting for shot quality are Lack and Smith.

-----

Management clearly see's two players with massive room for improvement in a better system/ team. Let's see if it works.

Both players also have direct relationships with management / the coaching staff here in Calgary and have enjoyed their best seasons under their tutelage.

Seems like the perfect scenario for all parties involved.

Fair enough. I don't think you guys will need an ace in net with the way your defense is shaping up, if Smith can give you a .925 I don't think your backup will have to play enough games to make a huge difference in the standings for Calgary. Either way they are a shoe in for the playoffs. Cheers

Edit: maybe 925 is reaching for the stars, how about a 920.

There was like two starters with .925 SV%. Under ten with .920. Getting even to that would be well above expectations.

Yeah, .925 is unrealistic IMO. But if Smith was .914 in Arizona, I don't see why he can't improve to .916-.919 with a better defesne and team in front of him in Calgary. But honestly though, I feel like I have been beating this drum a lot recently, but it's like people don't understand that a .001 difference in save percentage is 1 goal every thousand shots. The difference between Smith who was 23rd in SV% among goalies with 30 games or more and being top 10, was .006. That is a minuscule difference, if a team allows 30 shots a game, that is only 1 goal every 5-6 games.

How can you regret it when you gave up nothing and have little to no expectations ? Flames have nothing to lose, literally nothing.

They could lose games if Lack doesnt play well.

Thats not nothing.

As a Flames' fan, I think Carolina wins this today as they freed up cap space and upgraded a pick. Neither Lack nor Murphy were any sort of assets to Carolina. That's a solid win in today's cap world.

Now, if Lack rebounds then Calgary will also win. He was a pretty good goaltender - I would say better than a backup, but probably not quite a starter. He is below backup level at the moment, so we will see. This could be a really nice win for Calgary as well.

Murphy I have no hope for. I haven't kept up with him since his draft +1, but it seems he is still not much of a player by reading all the Carolina fans' comments. I doubt he plays at all this season as Kulak, Wotherspoon and probably Andersson are all ahead of him, even considering the experience angle. Maybe he rebounds, but he always seemed like a guy with no IQ to me.

Lack was pretty good after returning from injury in February. Because he missed so much time, his numbers are badly skewed from his handful of games pre-injury. Post-injury Lack actually had a ,915 SV% and 2.32 GAA, not elite numbers but quite respectable for a backup.

Lack was bad up till his concussion, then was horrible, then got called out by Peters, bounced back, then got hit by a soccer ball and went back to bad.

I don't know what 14-year-olds you know, but Hicketts was around 5'8" 180-185 lbs at the time of the draft. I don't know many 14-year-olds with bodies like that who can play 30+ minutes/night.

Also, your username clearly refers to Johnny Gaudreau who was ... what, 150 soaking wet at 18? Skill > a big lug who can't skate or handle the puck
You're comparing a small forward with world class skill to a small defenseman with tweener skill? is that you Joe?

I think it was a necessary trade, and its good for Lack and Murphy.

I hope Calgary give them a chance, I think Lack could bounce back for sure, and Murphy might do well in a different environment.

For the Canes, simply put, yeah frees up cap (hopefully for some trades to come in, especially with the team under the cap floor), and sets Darling/Ward as the GK pair for the upcoming season, starting to see how the Canes will shape now, but we'll see who else is brought in.

Its a short term win for the Canes (with a pick upgrade), but if Lack bounces back, and Murphy improves his game, potentially a really good deal for Calgary. Good luck to them both.

Some Canes fans (me being one of them) think Lack was a victim of bad goalie coaching. He was coached to play a style that he didn't play. I think a lot of that led to him being out of position much of the time. Add in a concussion or two, playing behind Ward (who is Canes goalie emeritus), his goofy nature, and a coach who said "make an effin' save"...this is where you end up. He may put it back together.

Murphy. Best of luck. He has been given every chance to put it together and he's pretty much Doug 4 from Multiplicity.

It's perplexing how often you read about things like this. We had the same in Toronto at the start of last season, when Andersen suddenly started to play a much more aggressive style than he had at any other point in his career, one that didn't fit his strengths and resulted in his game imploding. I've read about similar situations at various points over the last few years.

It seems to me that we have a tendency among goaltender coaches in NHL to try and force their players to play a preferred style, rather than use their knowledge to mold the player in accordance to their strengths and weaknesses.

How many years left on Lack? What happened from the time he was solid in Vancouver to Carolina? It almost seemed like he went downhill after he went to Carolina.

As Sheriff Bart just referenced - coaching. Carolina's goalie coach at the time, David Marcoux (a name that should be familiar to most Flames fans), had Lack fundamentally change his style and it messed with Eddie's head to the point where he was second-guessing himself on things - positioning, if he should/shouldn't play a puck, when he should play shallow vs. deep, when he should start challenging the shooter, etc. Marcoux also wanted a goaltender who was a strong skater and Eddie just wasn't that.

Lack was bad up till his concussion, then was horrible, then got called out by Peters, bounced back, then got hit by a soccer ball and went back to bad.

I think by "soccer ball" you mean "Andreas Athanasiou." It seemed like after he hit his head in that collision he reverted to the mean.

I thought one concussion came from a soccer ball.

You know, Cherry predicted Murphy would go first OA. He didn't.

Yet you see Cherry boasting when his predictions come true, but now?

Is CGY just making moves to make moves or stay in the news? Because this deal makes no sense. I have liked their trades this off-season up until now. This is a terrible waste of roster and cap space.

They are banking on Smith as number 1.

This is for a backup who had shown he can play well in the past that their coach has some history with.

What other FA can they sign at this price with no question mark?
What other goalie they can get for nothing at this price tag?

Dont complain about what they paid because it's nothing. Kanzig is a ECHL player and downgrade from 7th to 6th is close to nothing.

Does that make better sense?

Flames are also getting a young potential bottom pairing right shot D who may benefit from a change of scenery, and who at the very least will push Andersson into having to earn a spot on the NHL roster.

Plus, all we gave up was a D prospect who was probably 8th or 9th on the D prospect depth chart.

Considering Marcoux is credited with turning Kipper into Kipper, I don't think you will find many Flames fans will agree with him being a poor coach. But that said, I am one that believes it needs to be the right fight between the goalie and the coach, if they don't mesh, they don't mesh. One plus for us I think is that Gulutzan knows Lack from Vancouver, so hopefully that helps.

When it comes to Murphy, I don't think we expect anything, but look at Schultz going from Edmonton to Pittsburgh, sometimes a change of scenery and a different system can jump start a player. Don't expect it, but it would be great if it happened

How does it make no sense? The Flames needed an affordable backup and depth defensemen, Carolina needed to shed payroll. Gulutzan was an assistant with Vancouver when Lack was there, so he is familiar with him and I would guess fairly high on him. Murphy more than likely sits in the pressbox as the number 7 or ends up in Stockton (we need a RD down there). If Lack isn't up to the task, then we give one of Gillies/Rittich a shot.

Yeah Lack isn't guaranteed to have a roster spot. Similar to when Setoguchi signed here and people were up in arms, if he doesn't perform he's going to get demoted.

I've stated before but there is a lot of confidence being put in Gillies and Parsons, Gillies most likely gets NHL time.
