The thing is, we're also doing SJS a huge favor by eating his cap hit in a trade or buyout so he can sign/play for them, so they really do owe us something for that. Otherwise, he rides the bench or gets suspended for going AWOL or something.

I was the one guy on here screaming about getting Marleau as a cap dump, and I'm glad that the Canes front office had the same idea.

I wanted to do the same, but I thought we could get Kapanen or Johnsson out of it.

It's not a bad deal for Toronto, as long as they don't make a habit of it....but looking at their history, we can guess they probably will.

We’re only doing them a “huge favor” if they actually want him.

It’s not like “gee you really owe us something, otherwise you’d be paying him $6mil”, as if they actually would’ve taken him at that cap hit without similar payment from the Leafs.

The favor we’re doing is for the Leafs. The Sharks are just getting the table scraps. I think if anyone’s doing the Sharks a favor it’s Marleau, who will now likely sign for cheap.

you know I just realized what the one annoying thing about this trade is: no buyout of Darling. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you can only have 3 buyouts over the course of a CBA. We had Semin and Wiz.
Confirm. 3 for the duration of the 2013 CBA.

There's no way to look at this other than us paying $3.833 million ($3,416,667 this year and $416,667 next) for a first-round pick.

It's almost like Dundon said, "end this cheap narrative now."

It's become clear the organizational philosophy is to stockpile as many high draft picks as possible and play the odds. This particular pick might not pan out but having 4-5 picks each year in the first two rounds eventually gets you a hell of a lot of good players.

We now have a boatload of picks for the rest of this year and next year.

This has the feeling of Step 1 in what could be a big day for us. We can now package a 2020 1st and 2 2019 2nds along with a player for a huge upgrade and still have all our own picks left

I hate this deal. The only way we should have taken on Marleau is to get better now. Not ask him to take away a roster spot from a good young player.

Might be insurance for an offer sheet but I doubt it.

Query: (as I am not the expert) but that's 3 outside of the regular period of buyouts. When is the regular period of buyouts (I'd assume between seasons)

Thanks, regardlessly

I want the pick to be top 10 next year so we can spend a year rooting against Toronto and their unprotected 2021 pick.

June 15 (or 48 hours after Stanley Cup conclusion) to June 30. Plus there may be another window if team got Arbitration(s). SPC Paragraph 13 is the buyout clause.
