I dont know how to feel about this. We get a first rounder next year/trade assest, but why help the leafs? I guess if we didn't, someone else will, so take advantage.
The Leafs were going to find a way out. They weren't just going to give up and fold or play over the cap. We got a freaking extra first for nothing major. Great asset to dangle in trades or for another great prospect.

Can they trade Marleau for 50% retained to SJS for the rights to Donskoi?

Or anything?

If they can unload Marleau, they don't need to deal with the signing bonus that is apparently paid in July and December according to Friedman earlier this year.

31 Thoughts: Intrigue around NHL Draft starting to take shape - Sportsnet.ca

"4. Odd quirk in Patrick Marleau’s contract: his signing bonus is paid in two instalments, one in July, one in December. Remember, he controls his future, but that adds a wrinkle to any potential move."

Maybe this is the end of Toronto-Carolina rumors? The Canes interests now lie in Toronto being as bad as possible next year. The worse Toronto is, the better their new pick is.

You can never go wrong stockpiling first round picks.

I'll be interested to see if we can actually convince him to play for us. Obviously he's not "Patrick Marleau" anymore but he's not total junk either. I could see him fitting on Staal's wing nicely.

More likely we buy him out or just trade him to SJ outright, but, you never know.

Well, unless they’re bad enough to fall into the top 10. Then it remains their 1st.

I don’t mind the deal, but I can’t help but think about how other players on the team think about this. If the rumors are true and we’re struggling to find common ground with Faulk and Aho on their new deals, it’s got to be a slap in the face to see us basically waste $6 million next year.

Zero chance he plays here. He wanted to play for the Sharks and had a nmc. He's getting traded with retention ot bought out. I think actual money in a buyout is 844k, cap hit is 4.1 mil for 2 years, as if we care. Good move to get a 1st.

I can't see us keeping him around. More from the standpoint that I can't see he agreeing to anywhere but San Jose.

What I CAN see is us eating 50% and flipping him to the Sharks for something.
If you’re the Sharks and you already know he’ll only come to you, why give up an asset though?

Unless 50% retained is cheaper than you think he’s gonna sign for, which it seems they could offer him league minimum and he’d take it.

you know I just realized what the one annoying thing about this trade is: no buyout of Darling. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you can only have 3 buyouts over the course of a CBA. We had Semin and Wiz.

As it's a 35+ contract, the Canes will have to put $6M on the cap this year no matter whether they buy him out or not. It's still an incredible move by the Dundon/Waddell team to parlay that into an extra first. This is exactly the "get the popcorn out" moment that I was talking about for weeks. I was the one guy on here screaming about getting Marleau as a cap dump, and I'm glad that the Canes front office had the same idea.

Is it over the course of the Cba or just you can’t have three at a time? Not that it matters right now.

I thought of that, too, but SJ can't handle the $6.25 million cap hit. This whole thing is about that number, not the signing bonus ($3 million) or salary ($1.25 million). We'll save a whopping $416,667 to buy him out, but eat that entire $6.25 million cap hit.

There's simply no way we can trade him without his new team eating that cap hit, so it's either play for us, or buy him out.

Wiz is off the books, his buyout ended in 17-18. Marleau would be buyout #2, Darling #3.
