Injury Report: Captain JT injury (aftermath)

Yeah, concussions are just extremely unpredictable. Great news that it's "just" a concussion though, it looked like it could be that and numerous other terrible things.

I'd say absolute best case scenario, he's back for round 2 (if we make it to round 2). But worst case ... we've seen concussions keep guys out for a year, or even end their careers. They're massively variable, and honestly some of the ones that look really bad at first end up being not that bad, while some that look innocent at first end up being terrible, it's unknowable at this point.
I had a pretty bad one in the I where I blacked out .. but I got up went to bench .. back then no one really knew what a concussion was .. i played 2-3 weeks throwing up in hotel rooms and experiencing violent headaches (in fact I still sometimes get them) .. no one does it today but 30+ years ago guys played through concussions .. i remember calling my dad 1 time and he said you probably got a bad cold .. don't worry you'll shake it off .. glad to see we have advanced in hockey

I often agree with you when it comes to contrarians and self proclaimed "realists." However, and I hate to say it, I agree with the OP.

This team's biggest problem is between the ears. They rarely step up, and they rarely respond. Just look at how they did last year after Muzzin got injured. They blew a 3 goal lead and got shut out in an elimination game. I thought they might have finally gotten over the hurdle with the comeback in game 4, but nope.

Honest questions, and I hope I'm wrong on this, but has this core ever stepped up for anyone? I don't recall. I'd even go as far back as them losing a game where their rookie centerman scored 4 goals in his first NHL game. To be fair though, very few remain from that team.

I hope I'm wrong, and I'd love to eat bowlfulls of crow, but I won't believe this team has the mental fortitude to push through adversity until they actually show it. Atm I think they'll shrink away and blame the loss on their captain going down.

I hear what your saying completely. I've followed this team through it all too. And I would be lying if I was saying I didn't have some doubts and apprehensions. But I am also aware of the fact that I once had those same thoughts on Phil Kessel. He's not a winner, He is gutless, he has no heart, we could never win a cup with Phil...etc. Well he shoved that down my throat real f***ing quick after going to Pitt and being a huge part in them winning 2 cups. Writing these guys off because of their previous failures is not fair. You gotta learn somehow. They have an opportunity to rewrite the narrative. Something they have not done before. But this group is more poised to do it than ever before as well. I'll save my negativity for when they fall short, not when they stumble out of the gate. Its a marathon, not a sprint. We were likely never going to go wire to wire in the playoffs, this is just par for the course for May hockey

Great to hear from him (his account). Feeling a sense of relief with how the whole thing has played out, it was really hard to not assume the worse after the initial contact last night.

I've been watching since the 80s and I have seen very few injuries that had the "I didn't expect that" level of this. I was like watching a car crash on the road in front of you. For whatever reason, the injuries where a guy keeps trying to get up and can't seem to resonate more than the ones where a guy is just out cold.

One of the worst live events I have seen since Malarchuk. That's the only time I ever remember the play by play guy telling them to turn the camera away.

I expect JT to be back for the playoffs. In fact, if the Leafs get in trouble against Montreal, I would not be surprised to see him back in this series.

I think the best case is round 2.

Game 7 is in 10 days and I don't see him coming back that quickly. They will slowly ramp things up to test how he feels (sometimes players feel great and suddenly get symptoms during physical exertion).

There's pretty much no chance he'll have one practice and go straight into a playoff game.

Agreed. Reminded me of the Ben Fanelli hit from about a decade ago. A terrible sense of dread went through the arena that night, similar to what we saw in game 1.

Agreed. Just want him to take his sweet time and when he feels ok they can start some physical activity. Hockey is just a game, and it will be there when he is ready to return.

Does anyone know if he has a concussion history? Hes takin some big hits but he's mostly seen them coming or it wasn't to the head. He's usually pretty aware on the ice.

That may very well be one the most important in determining the extent of the injury and how long he needs off.

Concussion was the best outcome IMO. Could have been so much worse.

I'm in disbelief that thats all that it is and he's home resting already, i was sick to my stomach watching that hit, my heart sunk so low when he tried to get up and fell backwards.

To go from getting hit that hard, and having that reaction, to being at home less than 24 hours later. I'm so thankful a concussion is all it was, could have been so much worse.

I hope to see him again this playoffs, but his health comes first, i know he'll be stubborn but the Leafs really need to take care of him so he's fine for the rest of his life, no sense rushing him back.

I'd say middle of the second round at the EARLIEST. More likely third round if we get there.

But i don't care, just hope he's safe.

I have not felt like that since the Berrard injury. Especially when he tilted back and lying motionless. Just so awful to watch

He's done for the season baring any miracle. If he does and we are still in the hunt, man what a boost and story that will be

WAYYYYYY worse!
Sure it could be much worse. Look at Michael Schumacher. Poor fellow went skiing with his son one day and was wearing a helmet. The only concussion I ever had, I was also kneed in the head, by my brother, we were kids and he jumped off a raft and I was just below the waterline. It was a weird feeling.

wearing a suit, in the leafs box
Even if he doesn’t play, I’ll take that, apart from the obvious thing of him being able to walk, the moral support a captain can provide is insane. Just think back to last season when keefe first came in and brought Marner along during his injury, pretty sure it started our long point streak
