Suzdalev not going back to Regina not looking like the best decision at the moment. Cost him a spot at the WJC and at the moment he's essentially losing a year of development.
I’m afraid you’re right. Pretty bummed the way this is playing out. I had no issues sending him to Sweden but the fact that he isn’t getting any PT is just disappointing.

I’m most frustrated with Bears on this one. They rostered 30 players out of camp including signing some folks that are just elder statesmen. I know G Roe just had a hat trick and is feel good. Huntington has been decent but means Hofer and Rybinski are playing wing instead of center. Osipov just because he speaks Russian. O’Neil, Empsey, Napvronic. Even Limoges who has been good, but he is a 26 year old who is in there in place of Sudz.

If i had to guess, the Caps org didn’t really want him to go play juniors again (which i agree with at the time - and even now) and so they “pitched” him on Hershey. But Hershey didn’t create a spot for him forcing him to go to Sweden. Not sure why he isn’t getting time there. Seems odd.

They can still reassign him to Regina IINM. Looking like that should be the play here within the next month if things don't improve.

Well Miro is a left wing (primarily).

Will be interesting if Miro and/or Leonard will get a role in WSH next year. If so, it is a deep dive to rebuild/youth movement. But will they help us win next year. Maybe 1 in 2024 and one in 2025.

I expect Miro in DC next year, and hopefully a call up for a cup of coffee sometime this year. This team desperately needs young scoring talent, and if Miro continues to do well in Hershey, hopefully he proves all he needs to at the AHL level. I hope Lappy is ready next year as well. Let’s keep the youth movement going.

Leonard, I suspect, will stay in college another year. That freshman line from USNTDP came to BC for a reason - and it’s likely to play together for more than one year. Maybe if they win the Beanpot and/or the NCAA championship this year they’d leave early. I could see Leonard going straight to DC, though, once he leaves BC.

I expect the same with Miro. Don't think he's ready for more than a few games to get his feet wet this year. I'd guess Leonard does another year at BC and then comes pretty much straight to WSH.

Just saw this. The way you are describing Hershey and how they are run is a little off base. That’s how it was under Doug Yingst. He had a lot more say in how the team was constructed. It’s my understand that Helmer has input, but it is no where near the level that Yingst had. He works closely with the Caps to assemble the roster and make decisions. They signed a bunch of those guys so they could have depth. We’ve seen a lot of them get reassigned to SC in the past month.

I think the organization might have thought Sudz was further along than he was and that he would essentially be on the level that Miro is. Seems like his training camp at both the NHL and AHL was disappointing. In retrospect he should be in Regina

Good breakdown. Don’t know the ownership/GM structure in Hershey but i know they work closely. And I know the Bears organization also wants to win and has a separate (but aligned) agenda. I’m just saying we needed need all of Limoges, Roe, Huntington, and Osipov. We would have been better with letting Sudz stay and Hofer, Rybinski, and Strome play more and call up O’Neil, Naprovic whom could have stayed and Epsey.

Disagree. Suzdalev was completely outmatched and ill prepared for training camp. He was outmatched in practice leading up to his departure and didn't belong in the AHL. You don't force guys into the lineup if they don't belong. He should have gone back to Regina. How impactful was the Calder cup run for the boys last year? You've got Mikey, Beck and Protas playing big roles. Lappy coming in to fill injuries. They want to breed that same winning mentality into the kids and playing a bunch of guys who don't belong isn't how you do that. You build a winner and work the kids into the lineup around them. Hershey is a top tier AHL organization, there's no reason to doubt what they do.

  • Washington Capitals 2022 second-round draft pick Alexander Suzdalev has had his WHL rights traded from the Regina Pats to the Saskatoon Blades. Regina received three players and three draft picks in return, including a first round pick in the 2026 Draft. Suzdalev scored 86 points in 66 WHL games last season, adding 10 points in seven playoff games. But he’s since returned to Sweden, playing in 13 games and scoring three points with Mora IK of Sweden’s second league. This blockbuster WHL move could be a sign that Suzdalev is poised for a return to Canadian juniors.
