Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

Do you guys who watch Hofer expect him to become an NHL regular? His production isn't very inspiring for a big, hard working 21 year old in the CHL. Does he have the ability to play even on the 4th NHL line?

Being a late round pick it is sort of prove at every level. Hopefully he'll be at the Dev Camp coming up so sure there will be some evaluation there but more to see what he looks like at Hershey since I believe he turns Pro this year.

30. Washington Capitals

Top 5 Skater Prospects: Connor McMichael, Hendrix Lapierre, Alexander Alexeyev, Ivan Miroshnichenko and Ryan Chesley

Similar boat to the Penguins. A couple pieces in the prospect pool but nothing earth shattering. Acquiring Sandin from Toronto at such a young age may help soften the blow. But it won’t surprise me if the Capitals don’t make the playoffs again in the Ovechkin era.

Team Strength Rankings (May 2023)

Ouch.

Interesting. The Prospects are near the bottom but Hershey is good so how valid is this?

Incidentally, Caps ' rights to Dru Krebs and Martin Has expire tomorrow. (Hadn't seen this mentioned, but I've also been on vacation and not laying close attention to non draft stuff.)

No idea if they'll sign either one, could see arguments for and against. I think they'd be more likely to walk away from Krebs, though.

Following myself up, TEB reporting the Caps won't be signing Krebs or Has.

I once had some hopes for Has, but he never really improved from his draft year commensurate with players that have an NHL future.

It wasn't that long ago he was the Caps' top RHD prospect. He might've actually been their only RHD prospect at that point though...

AHL team success and NHL prospect pools are two very different things.

Michael Sgarbossa and Michael Vecchione are the Bears' two leading regular season scorers. Neither of them is an NHL prospect. Outside of Vincent Iorio and maaaaybe Lucas Johansen, nobody on the defense has much of an NHL future. It's anchored by former NHL depth guys and career AHLers like Aaron Ness, Gabriel Carlsson, Logan Day, and Dylan McIlrath. Shane Gersich and Joe Snively are both 26 already. Ethen Frank, Beck Malenstyn, and Garrett Pilon are all 24. There's not much runway left for any of those guys left to take hold as even depth NHLers. There's really only three prospects that can be considered anywhere near Blue Chippers on the Bears (McMichael, Lapierre, and Protas) - and none of those guys would come close to topping out the prospect rankings on many other franchises.

And it's not like the Capitals have much in the way of reinforcements from Europe or juniors. Miro is obviously the most intriguing, but after that it gets barren quick.

Thats pretty much how i see it. If we are fortunate we can compare Bears run a bit for 08-10 teams and the 15-16 run. Propably wont get anything close to Carlson out of it, but if we are (very) lucky might look forward for something around like;

Iorio -> Alzner
CMM -> Stephenson
Malenstyn -> Beagle
Lapierre -> Matthieu Perreault
Protas -> decent NHLer?
Shephard -> Neuvirth? Vanecek? Holtby LITE?

Hunter Shepard is actually a couple months older than Vitek Vanecek. He's already 27. Maybe he can sneak into an NHL gig as a back-up sometime in the next year or two, but it would be one heck of a late bloomer story. Vanecek made his NHL debut at 25. Holtby at 21. Neuvirth at 20.

I love Shep but he's not going to be an NHLer. Our best bets currently are Stevenson and Gibson. But, both are already 24(Gibson is 24 in a few weeks). As much of a goalie factory as we've been I honestly don't see the future starter of the franchise in our current group. I feel like they need to look outside the college ranks for goalies moving forward to maximize longevity and salary. College guys age out too quick to be impactful unless they're one and done in the NCAA as a full time starter. Example Chase Clark is 21 and is just really starting his college career this coming season. He played cleanup duty in 8 games last season and then transfered. He'll probably play at least two more in college then be 23-24 when he's ready to jump to pro hockey. By the time he proves himself there he'll be 25-26. Basically the same trajectory that Stevenson and Gibson are on.

Yeah, as odd as it is to say but watching the playoff run really cemented to me that he's not a guy that'd break into the NHL level.

But realistically, they've got 2 more years before they need to start thinking about their next netminder. That's when Lindgren's gone and Darcy has one year left on his deal. Short of injury, I don't imagine anyone but those two are getting serious minutes for the Capitals.

On pure talent alone, Lapi looks a step above all of our other prospects in Hershey, IMO. Just his combination of skating ability, finesse, and vision are higher-end. CMM looks really solid too, but just don’t see him particularly incredible at one or a couple things at the pro level - more of a jack of all trades in everything, which is fine. Maybe the hockey IQ? Love Protas, but he really needs to continue working on his skating with and without the puck (know he’s already gotten a lot better). I was very impressed by Iorio this playoff run as well. Everything is there, just needs more work on his skating as well.

Really? I feel like, while he had a great game 7, I don't think Lapierre was all that noticeable for most of the run. McMichael felt like a step above most guys most of the time but, like I've said before, his skills aren't something that allows him to individually dominate. He needs good quality linemates to really show off which is why I think he'll look better at the NHL level then he does at the AHL level.

I'm still a little sad about Protas. He was good, but I was hoping for him to be a bit more then bottom 6 style play good. He had some flashes, and he's a big body and they take time, but was hoping for more consistency from him.

I think the biggest winners of prospects had to be McMichael and Iorio, with a small shout out to Lucas Johansson. I think those first two 100% look like future NHLers with their play while Lucas probably deserves to at least be the 7th D next year, if not a bottom pairing guy going forward.

I don't think it's the skating now that Protas needs to work on so much as his hands. He fumbled tons of pucks and didn't display soft mitts at all. For a guy that was a pretty strong playmaker at the WHL level it's an area he's got to get back to focusing on to have much of any upside beyond a checking role.

Yup totally…his skating is passable…he needs to produce offense.

We need more guys like that on the team.

Imho, that was one of the best hockey games I've seen in several years. I'm truly grateful I got to witness that Game 7 epic win. Lots to like about it and the key prospects.
