Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

I think this is probably for the best. He’ll be getting consistent minutes in the AHL instead of constantly being tossed around between the KHL/VHL/MHL again

I think it's probably a good time for him to come over too. If he can show off during training camp, there's an outside shot he makes the team.

I'd much rather he play 20 minutes a night in Hershey, but either way is great for us.

Wonder if he would have signed if Lavi as still here and sans BM's comments after the season.

So any reason why Miro went scoreless for like the last 10 games in the MHL playoffs? Certainly not ideal

Good question. He had a point per game in the regular season, so that's pretty odd.

BTW, this was not expected. Should not have happened.

I watched several games of the MHL final series. Miroshnichenko looked quite fatigued, lacked focus, uncharacteristically failed to score several relatively easy chances and was pretty disengaged from the play (especially compared to the Canes prospect Trikozov or the Chaika leader Misnikov). His coach even scratched him for game 4, and it's widely considered that it was not disciplinary, but simply to rest Ivan.
It was easy to see his standout skill, and deterioration in his play was expected after such a difficult year. I'm not very worried, but still disappointing to see the entire semifinal and final series without a point.

Any possibility Miro becomes like a 20 goal scorer in the NHL this upcoming season?
It's much more likely he spends the next year in the AHL.

Similar boat to the Penguins. A couple pieces in the prospect pool but nothing earth shattering. Acquiring Sandin from Toronto at such a young age may help soften the blow. But it won’t surprise me if the Capitals don’t make the playoffs again in the Ovechkin era.

Team Strength Rankings (May 2023)

Ouch.

I mean, it's not a lie. We're in deep shit going forward...should be sellers again next deadline to aquire more assets unless something miraculous happens. Ovi is going to get the record no matter who he's playing with. Only injury could prevent him from the record at this point. We've got some solid pieces in the pipeline assuming they pan out but Miro is really the only one with all star caliber potential imo. Hopefully they can add another nice piece this draft to pair with him. Mikey and Lappy are nice players but neither are really that bonafide #1 center type guy. They're both complementary centers on a scoring line that's carrier by a star winger at best.

Yet McClellan et al keep getting a pass on this. This was NOT an unavoidable reality of being a successful team, certainly not to this extent. When several perennially successful teams have stronger prospect pools than we do, that says a lot. Our drafting has been pretty meh.

I'm not that much of a prospects analyst, but do you really agree that the Caps' prospect pool is 3rd worst in the NHL?

Not that it changes that much, but are McMichael, Miroshnichenko, Alexyev etc. a worse group than, say, Tampa's? Their top prospects, according to the same source, are Howard (who had a 6-goal NCAA season and had to change teams), Edmonds (an overager who got drafted because he had a good OHL season at 20-21 years old) and Koepke (almost 25 years old and had just had a 19-point AHL season). The Caps prospects may not become stars, but a lot of them are expected to become reliable NHL players at least.

Decided to take a closer look at this. Here's the rankings from that list combined with the rankings for points per 82 games from 2018-2022 (the period used in the prospect rankings).

There's 3, maybe 4 teams "successful" teams depending on how generous you want to be that are ranked significantly higher that their point totals would suggest.

The Leafs seem to have a high ranking based solely on their depth. Knies is the only high end prospect left in their system, and the only guys they've drafted since 2018 who've established themselves in the NHL are playing on other teams (Sandin and Durzi). Depth is nice, particularly if you're just starting a rebuild, but for a team trying to contend it's kind of wasted since it's so hard to find them playing time at the NHL level. Scott Wheeler's rankings for the Athletic in January had them at 18th.

The Avs system is being buoyed by the fact that they lucked into a 4th overall pick (Bowen Byram, who's 9 games shy of their cutoff for graduation) through the Matt Duchene trade, as well as the site being inexplicably high on Ryan Merkley despite him being nearly 23 without breaking into the NHL. Wheeler's rankings, which don't factor in Byram, have them dead last.

The Canes, like the Leafs, are ranked highly based on depth. They've drafted 2 players since 2018 who've played more than 3 NHL games - Svechnikov (#2 overall pick in 2018) and Jarvis (#13 overall pick in 2020 that they got for eating Marleau's contract). Both have graduated so they're not influencing this ranking, but it illustrates that they haven't been sustaining themselves by finding gems late in the draft since they finished their rebuild. Wheeler put them 12th.

The Wild probably don't deserve to be counted as a "successful" team, but I'll include them here anyway just to show why they're not comparable. They've picked at #9 and #12 in this timeframe and traded NHL players for 1sts (plus Brock Faber) in each of the last two drafts, for a total of 7 1st rounders in those 5 years. And again, it's another pool where depth is a major selling. Wheeler actually had them at #1.

Ultimately, the Caps have done a bit worse than expected overall in drafting the last five years, and about as expected to slightly above expectations if you factor depth out of the equation. I don't think that's anything to complain about.

A couple of goals for Hofer this past Saturday to stay alive and extend their series with Seattle to six. G6 is tonight.
Been meaning to see if his team was still in it thanks for the reminder/linkage.

Kamloops loses Game 6 but since they're hosting the Memorial Cup they're in as hosts. Seattle/Winnipeg starts Friday for the other WHL spot.

1+1 for Ryan Hofer as Kamloops beat Peterborough 10-2 in the Memorial Cup.

8 points in 2 games for Logan Stankoven.
