Hockey programs are tough to start. It’s not like lacrosse or something where the team can play in a stadium that’s already built. You need an ice rink that needs to be built to NCAA specs and college campuses don’t have a ton of extra real estate for things like that. There are also Title IX considerations. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s a journey.Why not both? DMV should have legit college hockey programs.
Penn State was rumored to be going D1 for a good 10+ years before it finally happened. Same with ASU. There was speculation Navy might go D1 (Air Force and Army have D1 hockey teams) when they announced they were building a new rink but the new rink doesn’t have near the seating capacity for NCAA standards and would need to be renovated for them to be eligible.
