Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

Why not both? DMV should have legit college hockey programs.
Hockey programs are tough to start. It’s not like lacrosse or something where the team can play in a stadium that’s already built. You need an ice rink that needs to be built to NCAA specs and college campuses don’t have a ton of extra real estate for things like that. There are also Title IX considerations. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s a journey.

Penn State was rumored to be going D1 for a good 10+ years before it finally happened. Same with ASU. There was speculation Navy might go D1 (Air Force and Army have D1 hockey teams) when they announced they were building a new rink but the new rink doesn’t have near the seating capacity for NCAA standards and would need to be renovated for them to be eligible.

I never said that wasn’t a factor. In fact I defended the player earlier this year when another poster said he was a bust. If you go back and read what I said I admitted he may very well still turn out to be a great player. Regardless, I standby the fact that given his pedigree the Caps would probably like to see him in the VHL at this point. Go ahead and disagree but trying to say I am downplaying the dudes cancer is ridiculous.

That is my point though. You would like to see his numbers be a little better in the MHL. He isn’t dominating or causing havoc.
Yes but you are. You may not realize it, but you absolutely are. This isn’t some specific injury where you work in rehab on one area and the rest of you doesn’t change.

The dude had lymphoma. I’ve had lymphoma. Your lymph node system runs thru your entire body. It’s not a tumor that’s it’s one spot that you focus on. It’s everywhere (groin, stomach, chest, armpits, shoulders, neck, skull). They all are involved. It’s an exhausting disease that saps you of your strength and power. Weakens your entire immune system (sometimes permanently), and can take years to recover from. Personally, I was off work for 2 yrs to recover. And I was 36 and not a pro athlete.

I’d expect 2-3yrs for him to “get back to normal”, god willing he’s clean. Cancer treats everyone differently. So maybe I’m wrong. This was just my experience.

You can pick at whether the Caps should’ve drafted him, but I don’t see how you can pick at his performance. It’s a wonder he’s playing already, IMO.

Suzdalev is playing on a line with Bedard tonight in Game 1 of the playoffs. They just took a 1-0 lead in the second.

Edit: Suzdalev finishes with a primary helper in a win.

I respect his tenacity to even be playing. To me the question is not whether he is doing well for a guy that is recovering from lymphoma. I am looking to see if he's playing like a guy who will be a superstar for the Capitals over the next decade. Seems like a long shot at this point.

How good is Suzdalev actually? 86 points so far is pretty great, but is that a product of playing with Bedard or does he create offense on his own?

For a while they weren't even on the same line. I don't know how much of the season that was or if it is still the case, but I do recall that he was putting up big numbers without playing much with Bedard.

If Suzy becomes a big top 6 scoring winger i would be very happy. The potential seems to be there. A poor mans Kovalchuk perhaps?

If Sudsie doesn’t become a full-time NHLer, I will be supremely disappointed. Haven’t been this interested in a prospect since forever…probably Kuzy…

If they can get in the top four and nab Bedard, Fantilli, or Carlsson they have an interesting pipeline. Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson plus Lapierre and McMichael is a pretty solid set of young centers. Hopefully Miro and Suzdelev are top six wingers. Protas looks like he has a future in the middle six. Iorio, Chesley, and Alexeyev are all showing promise on the blue line and Sandin is young enough to be lumped in with them as well.

The pipeline doesn’t look nearly as bleak as it did a few years ago. They still don’t have a surefire star so you can question the upside but that could change.

Miro-Fantilli-Suzy
Protas-Lapierre-CMM

Has potential to be at least a playoff worthy top 6. Pretty big first line too.
