Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

I think Chesley is best suited to stay at Minnesota. Faber should be turning pro so that should move him up the depth chart on the right side there. Minnesota probably the right place for him for a another year or two

Apparently he has a wrist injury he's playing through, which I guess explains why his handles have seemed off. With Lacombe and Johnson due to graduate and a good chance Faber turns pro I'd like to see him return in a more prominent all-around role next season. There's a fair chance he's on their top pair and that seems preferable to a 4-6 AHL role. He could hack it as a pro given his physicality but ideally I think you'd like to see him dominate in all phases before moving up. They can afford to be patient and he did show some flashes of offensive upside at the NTDP. I'm not sure he's a PP guy as a pro but you'd at least like to see the skill level be a bit more routinely evident. Otherwise I'd wonder if he wouldn't get pigeonholed into just what he currently does well keeping it fairly simple when they already sort of have that in a larger body in Iorio. (And I might even prefer Iorio's puck movement and general upside more at this stage.) To maximize his upside I think they need to take it a bit slow and they can afford it given recent extensions.

Saw some McDonagh comparisons for Chesley and McDonagh did 3 years at Wisconsin, then split AHL/NHL, then full time NHLer. Had some pedestrian counting stats as well in college, nothing crazy. Hopefully that comp holds up!

I'm fine with Chesley going back another year with those 2-3 defense graduations.

Caps prospects playing are Mitchell Gibson (Harvard), Ryan Chesley (Minnesota), and Chase Clark (Quinnipiac). Chase has only played in eight games this year and is sporting a .840 save percentage and a 3.08 GAA so I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of him.

Minnesota won today. Quinnipiac and Harvard play tomorrow.
How the hell did they not learn to never draft a guy named Chase from Quinnipiac, ever again?! Lol…

Is there any indication that Gibson actually plans to sign? Aren't his rights up this summer?
Or that the Caps want to sign him….

When do we start hearing rumors about NCAA free agents. Given the Caps “re-tool”, I wonder if they are able to grab a high end NCAA free agent. Maybe that is me just hoping but who knows.

No idea. I know there are some links to who the top NCAA free agents are if you go back a few pages.

Brutal first round of the tournament. Only one of eight games wasn’t a blowout and that was a 2-0 win. Every other game decided by four goals or more including multiple games decided by seven goals or more. Just a bad, ugly first weekend for the showcase tournament for NCAA hockey.

It’s kind of crazy. Penn State has a home game versus Michigan to advance to the frozen four.
When I was playing in college, a few years back, Penn State didn’t even have a team.

I wish the terps would take some of their big 10 money and invest in a hockey program. We have the rinks and the players here now to do it and compete with these schools.

Penn State had a really good club team before making the jump. So did Arizona State.

Maryland has a long way to go if they want to start thinking about D1. Navy has a better hockey program than the Terps.

Why not both? DMV should have legit college hockey programs.

nothing wrong with the MHL? It's a junior league that typically relies on older prospects. Lots of Russian NHLers come out of the MHL
At this point, you’d like to seem in the VHL at least. Not saying he won’t become a great player still but considering he was in the KHL for a bit and now is in the MHL…meh. Would also like to see his numbers a lot higher in the MHL but alas.

Just don't think it works that way. The KHL is notoriously stingy about giving prospects real time but they still developed him in the 4th line this year and then sent him back to cause absolute havoc for a junior team. That's not wrong, and maybe honestly even desirable for him. You don't want him losing his creative offensive edge over the months because he's been playing men in limited minutes either, this is a solid place to be just outside a draft year

Also, yeah, recovering from a big life event and very questionable for a while. This is good news.

Ever had cancer?
I never said that wasn’t a factor. In fact I defended the player earlier this year when another poster said he was a bust. If you go back and read what I said I admitted he may very well still turn out to be a great player. Regardless, I standby the fact that given his pedigree the Caps would probably like to see him in the VHL at this point. Go ahead and disagree but trying to say I am downplaying the dudes cancer is ridiculous.

That is my point though. You would like to see his numbers be a little better in the MHL. He isn’t dominating or causing havoc.
